Wolverhampton's premier greyhound venue — tight, tactical, and speed-dominated
Monmore Green has been the heartbeat of greyhound racing in the West Midlands since 1928, making it one of the longest-serving tracks in the country. Situated in the Wolverhampton suburb of Monmore Green, the stadium has undergone significant modernisation while retaining the atmosphere and character that has drawn generations of racegoers through its gates. It operates as one of the busiest tracks in Britain, hosting meetings several times a week with a strong mix of graded and open-race competition.
The track is owned and operated by Arena Racing Company and broadcasts live on RPGTV and various streaming platforms, giving it a national profile well beyond its Midlands base. Monmore has built a reputation as a venue that rewards pace and tactical awareness — both from the dogs and the punters. Its card typically features a good spread of grades from A1 down through D-grade events, with regular open races and competition stakes attracting high-quality animals from across the country.
As a venue, Monmore offers excellent facilities including restaurant dining overlooking the track, extensive betting ring facilities, and modern kennelling. It remains one of the flagship tracks in the UK and is a must-know venue for any serious greyhound racing enthusiast.

Win rate at Monmore & their runners
Monmore's circuit measures approximately 419 metres in circumference, placing it in the mid-range of UK tracks by size. However, the dimensions tell only part of the story. The run-up to the first bend is relatively short at around 103 metres from the standard 480m start, and the bends themselves are moderately tight. This combination means that early pace and trap position are significantly more influential than they would be at a large, galloping circuit like Towcester or Nottingham.
The bends at Monmore have a consistent radius without the sharp camber changes found at some tracks. The home straight is of decent length, giving closers a realistic chance to make up ground on the run to the line — but only if they haven't lost too much at the first bend. The back straight is slightly shorter than the home straight, which compresses the racing and can lead to crowding on the third and fourth bends.
The sand surface is well-maintained and drains effectively, meaning Monmore rarely races on genuinely heavy going. The track tends to ride on the faster side of normal, and going allowance fluctuations here have a less dramatic effect on race outcomes than at some more exposed venues. The inside rail is well-defined and provides a clear racing line, which further advantages dogs that can secure an early position on the rail.
Monmore is classified as a speed-primary track in our analytics, and for good reason. Front-runners have a significantly higher win rate here than the national average. The data shows trap 1 winning at nearly 28% — well above the 16.7% expected share — while trap 6 sits below average. Dogs that can show early pace, break cleanly, and hold a rail position into the first bend are at a substantial advantage.
That said, Monmore is not a one-dimensional track. At the 480m trip, a strong finisher drawn middle-to-outside (traps 3-4) can still find opportunities, particularly in lower grades where the early pace battle may not be as fierce. The key distinction is between sprint trips (264m, where the first bend is everything) and the standard 480m, where stamina and race craft still play a role.
When assessing dogs at Monmore, prioritise first-bend speed and inside draw. Our field speed ratings, which measure how quickly a dog reaches the first bend relative to its rivals, are particularly predictive here — more so than at any other track in our database.
| Distance | Races | Avg Field | Avg Winner Time |

The Monmore sprint. At just 264 metres, this is an extremely short race where the break from the boxes is virtually the entire contest. Trap 1 has an enormous advantage as the field converges on the tight first bend almost immediately. Only dogs with explosive early pace should be considered here. Form figures from other distances are almost irrelevant — look at sectional times and first-bend positions instead.
The standard trip at Monmore and the distance that defines the track. Front-runners are still favoured but closers have more time to make up ground on the home straight. This is the distance where Monmore's character shows most clearly — it rewards pace but doesn't completely eliminate stayers. Look for dogs with strong first-bend speed but also the stamina to hold their position through four bends.
The Monmore middle-distance trip. At 630 metres, the dynamics shift towards stamina and race craft. While early pace still matters at the first bend, dogs have a full extra circuit to recover from poor positions. This distance is often used for staying-grade events and can produce more competitive finishes. Trap draw is less dominant here.
The Monmore marathon. These races are rare and typically feature specialist stayers. At almost two full laps, the first-bend advantage is largely neutralised over the course of the race. Stamina, fitness, and racing intelligence become the primary factors. Look for dogs with proven form at 630m+ rather than sprint specialists stepping up in trip.
How to read this: In a fair 6-runner race, each trap would win ~17% and place (finish 1st or 2nd) ~33% of the time.
Win% = how often this trap produces the winner. Place% = how often this trap finishes 1st or 2nd (standard place bet).
+ / − columns show the difference from fair share — positive means the trap wins/places more than expected, negative means less.

The single most important factor at Monmore is trap draw combined with early pace. If you're looking at a race and the trap 1 dog has demonstrated strong early speed in recent runs, that's your starting point. The inside bias is real and measurable — it's not a myth or a small edge, it's a structural advantage built into the track geometry.
For place betting, Monmore is a slightly tougher venue. The tight bends and compressed racing mean that interference incidents are relatively common, which adds variance to finishing positions. Win betting on strong trap 1 and trap 2 runners, particularly in sprint races, tends to offer the best value. In longer trips, look for class droppers with proven course form — Monmore specialists who know the bends can outperform dogs with nominally better ratings who are unfamiliar with the track.
Going conditions matter less here than at most venues due to the well-drained surface, but pay attention when the going allowance dips below -10. Heavy conditions at Monmore disproportionately affect wide runners who need to accelerate through the bends, further amplifying the inside draw advantage.
