The penultimate sprint of the morning card over Harlow's one-bend 238 metres, where the fastest dog wins one in four at D5 and the outside boxes hold sway — trap six wins 21.9% and trap three 20%, with trap five bottom at 14.6% from 6,761 runs. The early pace is all in trap six: Legendary Rebel is the sharpest breaker here by a wide margin and will lead to the bend from the best box. The catch is he has never won in six tries at this trip, and breathing down his neck will be Essjay Evergreen, the fastest dog in the race with three course wins to his name. Two intriguing shadows hang over the race: Lilliput returns from a two-month absence off a quick trial, and once-raced Lemon Beaufort has been trialling sharply too. Speed versus break, with the wild cards adding spice.
The fastest dog in the race — his speed figures lead the field and his 15.61 course and distance best is three lengths clear of anything else here — at a grade and trip where the quickest dog wins one in four. He has won three of his ten course and distance starts with four top-two finishes, he was keeping D4 company earlier in the summer, a grade above this, and the Clarke kennel ticks over at 24%. His last couple of finishes have been quiet, which is the honest knock, but the combination of field-best speed, a 30% winning record here and a fair middle draw makes him the most reliable route to the winner in a race with two big unknowns.
The likely leader. His break is the sharpest in the field by a wide margin, his first-bend work is strong, and he has drawn trap six — the best box at this grade, winning 21.9%. He was second here on his latest start for the in-form Hurlock kennel. The stubborn fact is that he is winless in six course and distance attempts: he keeps doing the hard part, leading at the bend, and keeps getting run down late as his finish thins out. Over just 238 metres there is less time for that script to repeat, and with the front-running weapons and the draw aligned this could finally be his day. The most dangerous kind of maiden.
Third here on his latest start and a winner once in three course and distance tries, with a sharp 15.84 trial earlier this month suggesting he is close to his best. His stronger form came at A7 over the 415-metre trip, where he ran to 58 last month, so he brings a touch of class to a D5 sprint. The negatives are the draw — trap two wins just 16.2% at this grade — and speed figures that put him second-best rather than first. Every chance of being in the finish; needs a little luck at the bend to win it.
First run since early May, but the signs from the trial box are good — she spun round in a quick 15.81 from the rail last week, faster than her official race best at the trip. Her back form includes a 66-rated run at A7 over 415 metres, class this field cannot match, though her two sprint starts here yielded nothing and she is a patient runner by nature, the wrong style for a dash. Fresh, well drawn for a rail runner, and quick in the trial: she is interesting, but two months off and an unproven sprint record make her a watch-first proposition.
Two wins from ten course and distance starts show he has done it before, but everything current points the wrong way: last of six on his latest run, ratings stuck in the teens and low 20s, a latest clocking more than six lengths off his 15.86 best, and now the worst box on the track — trap five wins just 14.6% at this grade. The Clarke kennel's 24% strike rate is the only warm number on his card. Needs a dramatic bounce-back.
One career race — a fourth here ten days ago — so there is next to nothing to judge him on, and one run tells you very little. His trial work has been consistently quick, with three fast spins this year including a 16.04 earlier this month, but trial speed comes without traffic, bumping or bend pressure, and his single race clocking of 16.42 was well short of those trial times. Drawn in trap three, a decent box at 20%. Could be anything; the evidence to say so does not exist yet.
Key insight: The fastest dog wins 24.9% at D5 over 238m against 20.5% for the top-rated — raw speed rules this grade. Trap 6 (21.9%) leads the draw stats, trap 5 (14.6%) trails. 6,761 runs.
