Harlow's 238-metre dash is run on one of the tighter circuits in the country and the first bend usually settles it — the best-bending dog wins nearly one in four of these sprints, the strongest such edge at any UK sprint trip. At this D5 grade the draw pattern favours the outside: trap six has been the best box, winning almost 22% from nearly 7,000 runs, while trap five is the graveyard at under 15%. Rathmeehan Lyra is the sharpest away and will show first, but she tends to weaken late and is drawn in the worst box. Old Fort Mickmac has the raw speed to be alongside her by the bend from the favoured wide draw, and once he strides to the front the race should be over. Cree Lullaby will be staying on from the middle if anything falters in front of her.
The fastest dog in this field by a clear margin — his 15.84 best over course and distance is the quickest anyone here has clocked, and his average times back it up too. He has had ten goes at this track and trip, winning twice with three places, so he knows his way around, and he gets trap six, the best-performing box at this grade and distance, winning more than one in five. All his recent racing has been at this level so the form is honest. His last few finishes have been modest, but at these short-sprint contests the stopwatch is the most reliable guide — and it says he is the one to beat.
The most reliable course and distance performer in the race — two wins and five places from ten attempts here, and she finished second last time out with her best rating in months. Her 15.89 best time is only a whisker slower than the selection's, and trap three has been a solid box at this grade, winning one in five. All her form is at this exact level. If the favourite doesn't break well, she is the one most likely to pounce.
Quietly improving with every run — his ratings have climbed steadily across his four career starts and he chased home the winner last time out. All four runs have come at this course, distance and grade, so what you see is honest, but he is still a maiden and his best time leaves him a couple of lengths shy of the quickest here. The inside draw keeps him out of trouble and another place looks his ceiling for now.
Comes back to the sprint trip having run well over 415 metres lately — second in A7 grade last time with his best rating in months. The concern is his running style: he is slow into stride and relies on a late charge, which is exactly the wrong way round for a 238-metre dash where races are settled at the first bend. Quick enough on the clock with a 16.09 best here, but he is likely to give the leaders too much rope, and one place from four course and distance tries tells the story.
Hard to make a case. Her ratings sit near the bottom of this field, she is winless in seven course and distance attempts with a single place, and the kennel has been struggling for winners all season. She occasionally pops up with a better run — mostly over the longer 415-metre trip — but there is nothing in her sprint form to suggest she can trouble the quicker ones here.
The sharpest away in the race and she will show up early — her early pace is the best in this field by some way. The problems come after that: she is drawn in trap five, the graveyard box at this grade and distance winning fewer than one in six, she has yet to win or place in six goes at this course and trip, and she tends to empty out in the closing yards. Expect to see her prominent at the bend and swallowed up late.
Key insight: At D5 over 238m the fastest dog on the clock wins 24.9% — comfortably ahead of the top-rated dog at 20.5%. Raw speed is the strongest single pointer at this grade, and trap 6 (21.9%) is the box to be in while trap 5 (14.6%) is the one to avoid. 6,761 runs.
