Harlow's 415-metre trip is a tight four-bend test where the first bend is everything — the dog who bends best wins more of these than at any other UK track and distance, and ground saved on the rail compounds through all four turns. At A7 grade the draw data from 5,761 runs says trap one is the box to have at 22.9%, with trap five the dead draw at 16%. The early pace here is stacked in the middle and outside: Cofam Spurs, Moaning Gamble and Double Errill all like to roll forward early, while Cofam Girl and Syls Angel are slow starters who need things to fall apart in front. Expect Cofam Spurs to use the best break in the field to control the first bend from trap four, with Moaning Gamble pressing inside him and the strong-finishing Cofam Girl picking up late scraps along the rail.
Ticks nearly every box on the card. He is the fastest dog in the field on the clock with a 26.98 best over course and distance, he has the sharpest break and the best first-bend ability in the race — the single most important weapon at this track and trip — and his record here reads three wins and six places from ten attempts, meaning he has finished in the first two in nine of ten course and distance starts. He chased home the winner last time and most of his recent racing has been a grade higher at A6, so this looks a winnable assignment. He does tend to do his best work early rather than late, but from trap four with this early speed he should be gone before that matters.
Won this grade at this trip last week with comfortably her best career rating, and she gets trap one — the standout box at A7 over 415 metres, winning nearly 23%. Two wins and five places from ten course and distance runs make her thoroughly proven here. The reservation is her style: she is slow into stride and does her best work late, so she needs a clear run up the rail while the leaders tire. Kennel companion to the selection, and the second string on the clock, but a repeat of last week's effort makes her the danger.
Drops back to A7 having run creditably in three straight A6 contests, finishing third last time with a solid rating. He has decent early pace and bends well, so he should be prominent from trap three, and his 27.02 best here is second only to the selection. Two wins from ten course and distance runs and a kennel operating at a healthy 26% strike rate. The knock is that he tends to weaken late and has hit the frame just twice in his last six — he may set the race up for others rather than win it.
Has put two much-improved runs together — second at this grade and trip on his latest start and a 63-rated effort before that — but his history is wildly up and down, with several runs in the 20s mixed in, and he is the slowest dog in the field on the clock with a 27.55 best. He won one of his four course and distance starts, so the track holds no fears, but slow starters from trap two at this trip need luck in running and he gives the field too much start.
Her course and distance record demands respect — three wins and four places from nine attempts, a better strike rate than anything else in the race — and she ran a 66-rated effort two starts back. The problem is the draw: trap five is the dead box at this grade and trip, winning just 16%, and she is a slow starter who relies on a late run, a tough combination over four tight bends. Third last week from this box. She has the ability to win but everything about the setup is against her.
Another dropping in from A6 company, where he was third last time out, and his three wins from nine course and distance starts show he handles the track. He breaks well and races prominently, and trap six is a decent box here at 20%. The concern is the clock — his latest run over this trip was a 28.01, well below his 27.00 best, and his ratings have been drifting for a while. If he recaptures his spring form he is a player; on what he has shown lately he is one for the places.
Key insight: Trap 1 is the standout box at A7 over 415m, winning 22.9% from 890 runs — the rail advantage compounds over four bends. The top-rated dog wins 22.1% and the fastest dog 21.8%, so no single number dominates: first-bend ability is the separator at this trip.
