Central Park's 277m sprint is all about the short dash to a difficult first bend — the track plays much tighter than its size suggests, and whoever pings the lids usually keeps it. At D2 grade trap 4 is the best box, winning just over 20% from 357 runs, with trap 6 close behind, while trap 2 is the weak draw at barely 14%. The fastest dog in the field wins one in four at this level, so raw pace counts for more than anything else. Eire Eddie has the top speed figure here and the right box, and he should be prominent from the jump. Eire Sheila and Earls Diamond own the two fastest single clockings in the field but neither has been anywhere near those times lately, while Tonnta is an unknown quantity — quick in trials but with only one open race behind her. Glosha Sally returns from a short break off a winning trial and can chase the leader home.
The fastest dog in the field on the ratings and drawn in the best box at this course and distance — trap 4 wins more D2 sprints here than any other. He's been a model of consistency, six straight D2 runs without a dip, and his last two clockings of 16.82 are right there with the best current form in this line-up. He hasn't won often — one from ten at the track — but he's rarely out of the frame and this is the right draw at the right level. The pace-and-box combination makes him the one to beat.
Second-best speed figure in the race and she matched Eire Eddie's 16.82 on her most recent run here. She hasn't raced since the end of May but warmed up with a winning trial in 16.89 a fortnight ago, so she's clearly fit and firing. Placed in four of her ten runs at this course and distance — the main threat if the selection doesn't break well.
Just one open race to her name — fourth here a fortnight ago — so she's very much unproven in company. Her trials have been sharp, winning twice in quick times last month, but trial speed doesn't always transfer when there are five other dogs on her heels. All her recent form is solo work, so she could run green in a pack. Watch rather than bet.
The most reliable winner in the race — three victories from ten runs at this course and distance and a 27% career strike rate, with a second place last week. The problem is the draw: trap 2 is the worst box at this grade and trip, winning barely one race in seven. He's good enough to overcome it but he'll need a clean first bend from the wrong slot.
Owns the fastest single clocking in this field — a 16.50 — but that was a while ago, and her recent form is modest: fifth last week and a string of D3 runs before that with times drifting the wrong way. She has two course and distance wins from ten tries, so the ability is in there somewhere. Needs to rediscover her old dash to figure here.
Another with a rapid career best — 16.51 — but he was nowhere near it last week, trailing home sixth in 17.47. Most of his recent racing has been at D1, so he drops in grade today, and trap 6 is a strong box at this trip. If he returns to his best he wins, but the recent evidence says he's below peak. Interesting each-way angle at a price.
Key insight: The fastest dog wins 25% at D2 here (691 runs) versus 22.3% for the top-rated — pace beats ratings at this sprint. Trap 4 best at 20.5%, trap 2 weakest at 14.4%.
