Newcastle 480 metres is a fair galloping track where the long home straight gives closers a genuine chance. At A4 grade, trap 1 and trap 3 share the best win rate at 21.1 per cent from over 350 runs each, while trap 5 is the weakest at 16.4 per cent. The composite and speed rank are closely matched in predictive power at this grade, both around 21.5 per cent for the top-ranked dog. Winhaw Tam is the clear class act in the field — she has genuine open-race ability and drops massively in grade tonight with a trainer who knows when to place dogs. Bramble Paulina is the most consistent performer at this level and won her last race here. Swish Swish Bish won last at A5 and has the best draw. The key question is whether Winhaw Tam brings her A-game after a disappointing last run.
By far the fastest dog in the field — her speed rating of 60 is seven points clear of the next best and her best time of 28.99 is in a different league to the A4 average here. Has only raced four times but two of those produced a 90-rated performance at open-race level, which is genuine top-grade ability. She drops massively in class tonight from OR1 to A4, which is several grade levels. The last run of 48 at OR1 was poor, but that was against the very best dogs in the region. At A4 she should be head and shoulders above these. Trainer Fairbairn operates at a 32 per cent strike rate and rarely drops dogs this far without reason — this looks like a deliberate placement to get a confidence-boosting win.
Won last time at A4 grade with a performance rating of 77, which is easily the best recent run at this level in the field among the proven A4 performers. Versatile runner who can race anywhere in the pack. Course and distance record shows one win and four places from eight runs — the place rate of 50 per cent suggests she is always thereabouts. Trainer Hardy runs at a 22 per cent strike rate. She is the benchmark for this grade and should be right there at the finish again. The second-best speed rating in the field behind the class dropper.
Won her last race at A5 with a 74-rated performance and now steps up to A4. Drawn in one of the two best traps at this grade, with trap 1 winning 21.1 per cent. Tends to come from behind and will need the pace to be strong to make her run count. Course and distance form shows three wins from ten runs, so she knows how to win here. The concern is consistency — form figures of 74, 59, 72, 56, 46 show she can go from winning to well beaten on successive runs. Capable of a big run on her day but hard to rely on.
Outstanding course and distance record with four wins and seven places from ten runs — a 70 per cent place rate that is hard to ignore. Tends to come from behind and the long straight suits him. However, the speed rating of 34 is comfortably the lowest in the field and he was well beaten last time with a rating of just 46. Form has been dropping since winning at A5 two runs ago. The clock says he is the slowest dog in the race and that is hard to overlook, even with the excellent course and distance numbers. Would need everything to go right.
Consistent A4 performer but nothing in the recent form figures of 52, 66, 64 and 48 suggests she can beat the class dropper or the in-form Bramble Paulina. Drawn in the worst trap at this grade, with trap 5 winning just 16.4 per cent. Course and distance form of two wins from ten runs is modest. Versatile running style but lacks the speed to be competitive against the sharper dogs here. Would need significant improvement to feature.
Has been running in and around the places at A4 without winning recently — form of 61, 57, 59, 72, 69. The peak of 72 four runs ago shows she can produce a decent performance but consistency is lacking. Versatile runner who handles bends well. Course and distance record of one win from ten runs is poor and she is drawn in trap 6 which wins 17.7 per cent at A4 here. She has the early pace to be involved but tends to weaken slightly at the business end. Hard to see her troubling the top two.
Key insight: Trap 1 is the best-performing box at 21.1% from 355 runs. Trap 5 is the weakest at 16.4%.
