Newcastle 480 metres is a fair galloping track with a long home straight. At OR2 grade, trap 3 is the best-performing box at 23.1 per cent from 39 runs, while trap 6 is the weakest at 12.1 per cent. Speed is the dominant predictor at this grade, with the fastest dog winning nearly 30 per cent. This race features several last-time-out winners. Coppice Saphire has the fastest time in the field and outstanding course and distance form. Blackhouse Kim won last impressively from trap 6 and has sharp early pace. Travel Safe has the highest performance average in the field with peaks well above 90, but she is a closer who starts slowly. Elegant Shadow has only four races under her belt but has placed in all of them — an intriguing improver.
Won last time at OR2 with a commanding 91-rated performance and has the fastest time in the field at 28.43 — well clear of the opposition on the clock. Course and distance form is outstanding with four wins and eight places from ten runs, which is a 40 per cent win rate and an 80 per cent place rate. The speed rating of 69 is the best in the field and at OR2 Newcastle, the fastest dog wins nearly 30 per cent of races. Has decent early pace and tends to race prominently before weakening slightly in the closing stages, but at this track she has shown repeatedly that she can get the job done. Trainer Fenwick at 20 per cent. The combination of best speed, outstanding course and distance form, and a recent win makes her the selection.
The highest performance average in the field at 84, with stunning peaks of 97, 96 and 94 in recent form at open-race level. This is a dog with genuine top-class ability — the question is whether she can show it from trap 1 as a closer with very little early pace. She tends to start slowly and pick up runners late, and at Newcastle the long straight does help that style. However, trap 1 at OR2 wins just 15.2 per cent. Course and distance form is limited to two runs with no wins but one place. She has been racing at top open-race level and is clearly capable, but needs everything to fall right from this draw. If the leaders go hard early, she could fly home late.
Has only raced four times in her career and has been placed in all four — form reads 81, 80, 73, 73, which is remarkably consistent for such an inexperienced dog. Drawn in the best trap at OR2 here, with trap 3 winning 23.1 per cent. Tends to come from behind and the long straight helps. Course and distance form of two runs with two places suggests she handles this course well. The concern is that we are judging from just four races — the average of 77 is strong but could be skewed by a small sample. Trainer Fenwick at 20 per cent. An interesting prospect who could be an improver, but with so few runs it is hard to know whether she can win at this level.
Has been running well at OR2 level with recent form of 80, 91, 51, 60. The 91-rated performance two runs ago shows genuine ability, but the follow-up of 51 was poor. Decent early pace and tends to race prominently. Course and distance form shows two wins from nine runs. Speed rating of 55 is the third-best in the field. Trainer Roberts at 12 per cent is below average. She is capable on her day but the inconsistency makes her hard to trust, and she is up against proven course specialists in this field.
Has been running at OR2 and open-race level with recent form of 66, 63, 76, 74, 55. Tends to come from behind and the speed rating of 38 is the lowest in the field by some margin. Course and distance form of one win from nine runs is poor. Drawn in trap 5 which wins just 12.9 per cent at OR2 here. The low speed, weak trap, and modest course and distance record all point the same way. Would need a significant step up to trouble the principals.
Won last time at OR2 with an impressive 87-rated performance from trap 6. Has the second-best speed rating in the field at 58 and sharp early pace. Course and distance form is solid with three wins from ten runs. However, trap 6 is the worst draw at OR2 Newcastle at just 12.1 per cent — she won from this position last time which shows she can overcome it, but the statistics say it is harder to do repeatedly. The form before last was inconsistent — 47, 70, 65, 73, 60. She tends to weaken in the closing stages, which on a galloping track means the strong finishers may catch her. Won well last time but up against a faster dog with a better record here.
