Newcastle's 480m is one of the fairer tests in the country — a lengthy home straight gives late runners time to get involved, and the wider lanes cut down on first-bend scrimmaging. Trap 5 is the surprise plum draw here overall, while trap 6 is the one to avoid; at A6 grade specifically trap 5 again tops the numbers at just under 20% with trap 6 the dead box at under 15%. Expect Alnwick Tornado to blaze off from trap 5 — he has the sharpest early pace and the best first-bend numbers in the race — with Highview Evie racing prominently from the middle. Tornado tends to weaken late, though, and on a track with this long a run home that's dangerous. Highview Edge and Slaneyside Boyne are the ones staying on; if Tornado empties out in the straight the race sets up perfectly for a dog with momentum, and Edge — the fastest in the field on the clock and rock-solid at this level — is the one primed to pounce, with the fast-improving Evie the main threat.
The most solid form line in the race — all six recent runs at this grade and trip, a win and three placed efforts among them, and he clocked his best-ever time here (29.54) when second last time out. He's outpaced early and does his best work late, which is far less of a problem at Newcastle than at tighter tracks — the long straight gives him time. Trainer Caile operates at a healthy 28% strike rate. The fastest proven dog in the race, in career-best form, on a track built for his style — he gets the vote.
Won her last two on the bounce, taking an A8 and then an A7 here, and the latest win came in 29.47 — the quickest recent time at the trip in this field by a fair margin. She's only had three open races so the form is still emerging, but the direction of travel is unmistakable: 28-rated on debut, then 57, then 63, improving every time she steps up. Versatile enough to race prominently without needing to lead, which is the right profile for this track, and trainer Caile (28% strike rate) clearly fancies the progression. The step up to A6 grade is new territory, but on the clock she's already ahead of these.
All her recent form is at this grade and trip, so she's proven at the level, but the pattern is wildly up and down — a 67-rated win two runs back sandwiched by very ordinary efforts, and she was 4th last time out. One win from ten course and distance attempts tells the story: she's capable of a peak run but you never know which Alisha turns up. Ran nearly half a second slower than her best last time, which is a worry.
The fastest dog in the field on the clock, but there's a big catch — he has exactly one open race to his name, a promising second here earlier this month, with everything before that coming in trials. One run tells you very little, and dogs with trial-heavy backgrounds often race green in a pack. He's slow away and relies entirely on a strong late run, which at least suits Newcastle's long straight. Interesting, but unproven.
The early-pace king of this race — sharpest from the boxes and the best first-bend numbers in the field, drawn in trap 5 which has been the best box at this course. He'll almost certainly lead. The problem is what happens next: he shows sharp early speed but can weaken in the closing stages, and Newcastle's long run home is exactly where that catches dogs out. Two wins and six places from ten course and distance runs says he's always thereabouts but hard to win with. All recent form is at this grade.
Honest and consistent — a win and four placed efforts in his last six, including a solid second at this grade last time out, and his recent form has come from A7 grade and below before this step up. The snag is the draw: trap 6 is comfortably the worst box at this grade and trip, winning under 15% of the time. He has enough early pace to hold a position but he'll need to work harder than most from out wide.
Key insight: From 2,225 A6 runs at this trip the trap bias is fairly flat — trap 5 leads at 19.6% and trap 6 is clearly worst at 14.8%. The top-rated dog wins about 22%, so this grade is competitive and one supporting angle isn't enough to bet with real conviction.
