Newcastle's 290m sprint is a dash where the break and the first bend settle most arguments — there simply isn't enough track for a slow starter to recover. Only a few dozen D1 sprints have been run here recently, so the trap numbers are a lean rather than gospel, but for what it's worth trap 1 has been the golden box and trap 4 hasn't produced a single winner in that sample. Moyvane Emotions is the sharpest away in this field and should show the way early from the outside, but he's the type whose early fire can flicker out late. Tyne Tees Richie and Whitehills Magic are both stronger at the finish than the start — over this trip that's normally a losing profile, but Richie has already proven he can win a D1 sprint here regardless, and Whitehills Magic is an intriguing class dropper trying the distance for the first time in a race.
The fastest dog in the field on the clock by a clear margin, and crucially he's already done it at this exact trip — his 17.13 here is the quickest in the race and it came when winning a D1 sprint over course and distance earlier this year. His recent runs have been over 480m in strong A2 and open company, so the drop back to a sprint against D-graders is a significant easing of the task. He's not the quickest away and does his best work late, which is a risk over 290m, but his raw speed advantage is big enough that he doesn't need to lead early — he just needs a clear run round the bend. Grade-wise he's been mixing it with far better dogs than these.
Won a D3 sprint here last time out and he's the sharpest breaker in this field, which counts double over 290m — he'll be the one showing the way to the bend. Eight course and distance runs with two wins and four places make him thoroughly proven at the trip, and his 17.23 best isn't far off the leaders. He's the type whose early dash can cool late in a race, but over this short a trip that's often academic — if he pings the lids from trap 6 with a clear run wide, he could easily make all. The step from D3 to D1 is the question.
Comfortably the classiest dog in the race — his recent form is all at A2 and A3 grade over 480m, rating in the 70s and 80s at his best, and he was second at A2 only last week. But this is his first ever race over 290m, and that's a genuine unknown: sprinting is a different job. The stable clearly has a plan — he trialled the trip in a fast 17.21 at the start of the month — and trap 1 has been the box to have in this grade. Tempting, but he's outpaced early by nature, which is the wrong way round for a sprint.
Ran a respectable second at A3 grade last time, but her overall form is up and down and her one previous crack at this course and distance produced only a 17.60 — nearly half a second slower than the principals. Most of her racing has been over 480m, so like others in here she's not a sprint specialist. Decent enough early pace to be handy, but the clock says she needs the others to trip over each other.
The sprint specialist of the field — ten course and distance runs, two wins and four places, including back-to-back D3 wins a few weeks ago. Her best of 17.13 matches the fastest in the race, but she hasn't been near it lately, running 0.43 slower than that last time when only fourth at this grade. Stepping up from D3 to D1 on fading recent times is a tough combination, and trap 4 hasn't produced a winner in the recent D1 sample here.
Key insight: Only 41 D1 sprints in the sample, so treat everything as a lean — but the fastest dog on the clock has won half of them, and trap 4 is yet to produce a winner. The numbers are thin at this level, so it's more hunch than certainty.
