The evening card opens with a competitive D4 over Harlow's one-bend 238 metres, on a tight circuit where the first bend settles most arguments and trap six is the prize draw at this grade — 22.9% from 5,745 runs, with trap five bottom at 16.1%. This is a deeper sprint than the grade suggests: two of the six won last week and the times are tightly bunched. Yo Magic has easily the sharpest break in the field and will blaze up from the worst box; Jura Go Bucko and Eden Weasley, last week's winners, both clocked low-15.5s and arrive in career form. Darver Casemiro, the model of consistency from the strong Saberton kennel, gets the golden outside box. The break decides it: if Yo Magic clears them from trap five she is hard to catch, but the two in-form winners have the class to hunt her down before the line.
The proven winner in a race full of nearly-dogs. He has won four of his ten course and distance starts — a 40% strike rate nothing else here approaches — and seven of those ten ended in the first two. He arrives off a win at this grade last week, clocked in 15.52, quicker than his official best, and his suitability numbers for this track, trip and draw are the strongest on the card. Trap three is a fair box at 18% and his kennel knows the track well. In a race where the margins are a length either way, the dog who keeps finding ways to win here is the percentage call.
Won at this grade and trip last week in 15.51 — the fastest recent clocking in the race, a whisker quicker than even the selection managed — and his speed figures share top spot in the field. Two wins and four places from ten course and distance starts, with every one of his last six runs at this exact grade. His form does swing about more than the pick's, mixing 33s and 34s with runs in the low 20s, and trap four is unremarkable at 17.9%. But on last week's evidence there is almost nothing between him and Jura Go Bucko — a repeat sets up a cracking finish.
Everything about his setup is right: trap six, the best box at this grade at 22.9%; the Saberton kennel, running at a powerful 30% strike rate; shared-best speed figures; and the fastest average time in the field at 15.75. His ratings are metronomic — seven straight runs between 24 and 29 — and he has made the first two in half of his ten course and distance starts. The catch is the finishing touch: just one win from those ten. He does everything right except pass the post first. With this draw and kennel behind him, if he is ever going to break the habit it is tonight — but the record says place, not win.
The fastest starter in the race by a wide margin — her break rating towers over this field, and her 15.77 average time is second only to Darver Casemiro's. She has won two of six course and distance starts and beat a decent field here in the spring. But the draw could hardly be crueller: trap five wins just 16.1% at this grade, and her trap suitability score is the worst in the race — she has never taken to that middle-wide slot. Fifth last week from a similar setup. She will lead them to the bend; holding the position through the crush from the worst box is the problem she keeps failing to solve.
Drops back to the sprint after a spell over 415 metres, where he ran a 39 last week and a 58-rated race in June — form with a touch more class than most of this field. His sprint record here is tidy: one win and three places from five course and distance starts, with a 15.70 best that stands up. The worry is his style — he is a patient runner who needs a strong pace to chase, and from trap one at a grade where the rail wins just 18% he will need gaps to appear on the fence at the bend. Classier than his sprint peers; less suited to the shape of the race.
Struggling to justify a place in this line-up on current form. She was last of six here on her latest start, she is winless in eight course and distance attempts with three places, and her speed figures are the lowest in the field. The 40-rated run at A7 in June shows she is not without ability over further, and her 15.77 best proves she once went quick here, but her latest 16.25 was four lengths off that and trap two wins just 16.8% at this grade. Needs a big bounce.
Key insight: Trap 6 wins 22.9% at D4 over 238m — the standout draw, six points clear of worst. Top-rated (20.8%) and fastest (20.9%) dogs win at near-identical rates, so proven course records and the draw are the sharper angles at this grade. 5,745 runs.
