A D4 over Harlow's one-bend 238 metres — first-fifty-metres racing on the tight circuit, and at this grade trap six is the golden box at 22.9% from 5,745 runs with trap five vacant tonight and trap two empty too. The stats and the form point the same way with unusual force: Savana Sakari, the fastest dog in the race on figures and average times, a winner here last time out with eight top-two finishes from ten course and distance starts, breaks from that favoured wide slot. Green Giants owns the fastest single clocking in the field and drops in from D3, so he is the one with the raw pace to make a race of it, while the consistent Early Pace and the classier-than-her-grade Alno Sue scrap for the pieces. Sakari's race to lose from the box the track loves most.
The signals rarely line up this cleanly. He is the fastest dog in the race on speed figures, his 15.57 average time leads the field by more than a length, and he matched his 15.50 best when winning at this grade and trip on his latest start. His course and distance record is exceptional — three wins and eight top-two finishes from ten runs — and his suitability marks for this track, trip and grade are the best on the card. Now he draws trap six, the box that wins 22.9% at D4, the strongest draw bias at this grade. He has been off for three weeks since that win, the only quibble on an otherwise pristine card. Fastest, best-drawn, best record: the banker of the evening card.
The raw speed threat. His 15.34 course and distance best is the fastest single clocking in this field — quicker even than the selection has ever gone — and he drops back to D4 after running at D3 last week, so the grade is right. Nine course and distance starts have brought one win and four places, and his ratings bounce between the mid-20s and high 30s without settling. Trap four is middling at 17.9% and his break is decent rather than electric. If he ever puts a full race together at this trip his best time wins most D4s; the question, as ever, is whether tonight is that night against a rival with no obvious weakness.
Second at this grade last week in a sharp 15.55 and thoroughly consistent — six of his last eight runs rated 26 or better, with two wins and three places from ten course and distance starts. His suitability marks across track, trip and grade are strong, and trap three is a fair box at 18%. What he lacks against tonight's principals is a gear: his 15.54 best is two lengths off the danger's raw clocking and his figures sit third in the field. Honest, reliable and drawn well enough to be in the argument at the bend — the likeliest of the rest to hit the frame again.
The class angle — she has spent much of the summer at A7 over the 415-metre trip, running ratings in the mid-to-high 40s with a 65 in her book, form that towers over a typical D4 sprint field. Her sprint credentials are slimmer: one win and two places from five course and distance starts, and she was well beaten at D3 last week. She has drawn trap five, the worst box at this grade at 16.1%, and her break is ordinary, a bad mix at a trip decided in the first fifty metres. The talent is real; the setup is not. One for the notebook if she draws wide another night.
His 15.52 course and distance best says he was quick once, and there is a fast trial from the spring in his book, but everything current points down: ratings flatlined at 21 for three straight runs, a fifth at this grade last week, one win from nine course and distance starts, and the slowest break in the field by a distance. From trap one at a trip where the first bend is everything, a dog who crawls away needs wholesale trouble ahead of him. The suitability numbers for the rail draw are the worst on the card. Very hard to make any case.
Key insight: Trap 6 wins 22.9% at D4 over 238m — the standout box. Tonight the fastest dog on figures, the best course record and the best draw all belong to the same runner, the strongest signal alignment on the evening card. 5,745 runs.
