Harlow's one-bend 238-metre dash at D5, where the fastest dog wins one in four and the draw stats from 6,761 runs favour trap six (21.9%) and trap three (20%) with trap five the dud at 14.6%. The pace angle is stark: Savana Polly, last week's winner, has an explosive break and fires from the favoured wide box, while Mustang Odyssey — the fastest dog in the race on both best and average times — breaks smartly from the other prize draw in trap three. Between them sits a field of contrasts: Howsyerday Dolly drops in from a month of A7 racing over the longer trip with the best recent ratings here, the perennial bridesmaid Wilbys Flyer has ten course runs without ever winning, and once-raced Good Azzaro is still learning his trade. Polly will show first; Odyssey's superior clock should tell at the line.
The fastest dog in the race on every measure that matters at this trip — his 15.86 best and 16.02 average over course and distance both lead the field, his speed figures top the card, and he owns one of the sharpest breaks here. At D5 over 238 metres the fastest dog wins one in four, the strongest signal this grade offers, and he backs it up with two wins and three places from six course and distance starts and the second-best box on the draw stats. His recent ratings have been modest and he was only fourth last week, which is the honest knock, but he does his best work early — exactly the right way round for a one-bend dash — and the clock does not lie. The class-conscious call in an honest heat.
Won this grade and trip last week and brings the most explosive break in the race — her early-pace figures dwarf this field — from trap six, the best box at this grade at 21.9%. Her back form includes 46 to 51-rated runs at A7 over the longer trip, so there is class in the locker beyond her plain-looking sprint times. Her 16.09 best over course and distance is the slowest of the main players, which is why she is the danger rather than the pick, but a repeat of last week's all-the-way effort from the same part of the track would make the clock argument academic. First to the bend, and here that usually means first to the line.
The form-book curiosity. She spent the early summer running 35 to 51-rated races at A7 over 415 metres — ratings far beyond anything this D5 sprint field produces — and on her return to the dash last week she was second at this grade. Two wins and three places from five course and distance starts show she handles the trip. The catch is her style: she is slow into stride, her break figures are among the weakest here, and trap two wins just 16.2% at this grade. Class says she should win; the mechanics of a one-bend race from a poor box say she will be picking through traffic. Each-way angle with upside.
Another switching back from the 415-metre trip, where he has been running solid 33 to 37-rated races at A7 all month. His sprint credentials are thinner — just two course and distance starts with a second place, though his 15.79 clocking at the trip earlier in the summer is actually one of the fastest in this field. Trap four is fair at 18.6%. He breaks adequately rather than quickly, and with confirmed speed on both sides of him the first bend could get crowded. Interesting if the market forgives his lack of sprint mileage; the evidence is promising but shallow.
Ten course and distance starts, no wins, no top-two finishes — the barest record in the field, and now the worst box on the track to go with it, with trap five winning just 14.6% at this grade. His speed figures are respectable, third-best here, and his latest 15.87 clocking was actually sharp for this grade, so he is not slow — he just never finds a way past whatever is in front of him. Third last week was typical: close enough to see it, never close enough to change it.
Two career races — fourths at this grade both times, rated 21 and 20 — plus five trials that have ranged from ordinary to slow, including a stumble at the boxes last month. There is nothing yet in his times, his ratings or his trial work to suggest he can live with the quicker dogs in this field, and two runs is far too little to call his ceiling. The rail draw wins just 16.7% at this grade. He will know more about racing after tonight; so will we.
Key insight: The fastest dog wins 24.9% at D5 over 238m versus 20.5% for the top-rated — raw speed rules. Trap 6 (21.9%) and trap 3 (20.0%) lead the draw; trap 5 (14.6%) trails. 6,761 runs.
