Another A7 over Harlow's four-bend 415 metres, where the first bend is the most decisive in the country and trap one (22.9%) heads the draw stats from 5,761 runs with trap five bottom at 16%. The early pace is drawn wide: Canya Queue has the sharpest break in the field from the strong trap six slot and Savana Beth owns the best first-bend rating from four, but both tend to weaken late — and that plays straight into the hands of the two strongest finishers. Dashgrove Sam, last week's winner and the fastest dog in the race on speed figures, will be picking them off from trap three, with the ultra-consistent Sober Speed running on from two. Front Asha, with one modest run at the trip and a string of trials behind her, is the card's mystery. Expect Canya Queue to burn round the first two bends and Dashgrove Sam to reel her in up the straight.
The form dog and the speed dog rolled into one. He won at this grade and trip last week with a 65-rated performance — the best recent rating in the race by some way — following a 58 the start before, and his speed figures lead this field by eight points. His 27.25 clocking last week was within a whisker of his best, so he is match-sharp, and the Saberton kennel is running at a powerful 30% strike rate. He is a patient runner rather than a fast breaker, which at this track is a genuine tactical risk, and one win from ten course and distance starts before last week tells you he has needed things to fall right. But with the two quickest breakers in the race both confirmed late-fader types, the race should come back to him exactly as it did seven days ago.
Owns the fastest course and distance best in the field at 27.18 and the sharpest break in the race, from trap six — the second-best box at this grade at 20.3%. His book includes a 66-rated run in June and five top-two finishes from ten course and distance starts. The pattern that keeps him from being the pick: he leads races and gets caught, with one win from those ten starts, and his latest run was a flat fifth in 27.95. On his best clock he wins this from the front; on his recent evidence he sets it up for the selection. The classic dangerous front-runner at a front-runner's track.
The metronome — six straight runs between 44 and 53 at this grade, including a third last week, and his 27.41 best time is competitive. But his course and distance ledger is the giveaway: ten starts, one place, no wins. He is a patient runner from a modest box at 16.7%, and while he will almost certainly be running on into fourth or third again, the record says he lacks the gear change to turn honest effort into victory. The Rea kennel's 20% strike rate is respectable. A model of consistency with a low ceiling.
Her first-bend rating is the best in the field and her recent ratings — 52, 47, 45, 54 across the last month — are genuinely solid for the grade. The two problems: she has never won in nine course and distance attempts, and her latest clocking of 28.10 was more than three lengths off her 27.34 best, suggesting the edge has come off her speed. She tends to do her best work early and weaken late, the profile that gets caught at this track. Trap four is middling at 17.8%. Solid place credentials; the win needs more than she has shown lately.
Improved to a 51 when third at this grade last week, one of three 44-plus runs in his last month, and his times are respectable without being sharp. But the ledger reads no wins and no places from seven course and distance starts, and he has drawn trap five — the worst box at this grade at 16%. His form swings between the mid-20s and low 50s with no warning, and from the dead draw he needs both his good version and a clean bend. The kennel's other runner in this race has stronger claims.
Just three career races — two modest sprints and a 39-rated fourth at A6 over this trip last week, which is actually the second-best single recent rating in this field. She has been trialled eight times, mostly over the sprint course where she has shown genuine dash, including the fastest sprint trial of the summer. But her one 415-metre trial was very slow after a bad start, her break and bend figures from her races are the worst in the field, and one run at the trip is no basis for confidence. The golden trap one box is wasted on a slow starter. A young dog with speed somewhere in there; tonight is about education.
Key insight: Trap 1 wins 22.9% and trap 6 20.3% at A7 over 415m. The top-rated dog wins 22.1% — and tonight the in-form, top-rated dog is also the fastest on speed figures, a compounding signal. 5,761 runs.
