The best 460-metre race on the card closes the meeting — B1 grade, five runners, and four of them arrive off recent wins. The grade's history here is short (117 runs, so lean on the trends gently) but one number leaps out: trap 2 has won ten of its twenty-two races, and that's exactly where Trapstyle Happy sits with the fastest opening strides in the field. He'll lead. The question is whether he can hold off Bridgestreet Ali, who has won three of his four visits to this course and distance, clocked the fastest time of the field's summer when winning a fortnight ago, and finishes his races like a train. Cragbrien Fire, a winner here on Sunday with the best career strike rate in the race, presses from trap 5, while Raparee Yulia — brilliant in A2 company in May, beaten out of sight last week — is the enigma. Mustang Razor owns the fastest personal best but has been busy losing at shorter trips.
The strongest all-round card in the race. Three wins from four course and distance starts — a 75% strike rate at this exact assignment — including a 62-rated victory a fortnight ago in 26.88, the fastest time anyone in this field has clocked this summer. He carries the top speed figure, the best distance suitability in the race, a 33% career win rate, and trainer Crocker's 22% strike rate. He's a patient runner who gives the leaders rope before reeling them in, and with Trapstyle Happy guaranteed to set fierce fractions, the race should unfold exactly as he likes it. Beaten only once in four tries here — and even then he was second.
Sits in the box that has won ten of the twenty-two B1 races ever run at this trip — the most lopsided draw statistic on the card — and he has the perfect style to exploit it: the fastest opening strides in the field, remarkable consistency, and a habit of blasting straight to the front. Won at B2 in June with a 61-rated career best, second at this grade a fortnight ago, and placed in 61% of his career starts. His solo spin here in June was electric — very quick away, 27.10. He can weaken late when pressed, and Bridgestreet Ali will be arriving exactly when that matters, but he'll take some catching.
The fastest personal best in the race at 26.67 and a 57% career place rate, but he's been a wanderer lately — open company at Pelaw last week, sprints before that — and his two most recent tries at this course, distance and grade produced a fourth and a fifth. One win from four course and distance starts. He breaks only fairly and the rail box has been quiet at this grade. The raw ability is unquestionable; the current form at this exact assignment is not.
The class enigma. In May she was running ratings of 81, 81 and 70 in A2 and A3 company over 500 metres — form that would demolish this field — and she won at B2 grade three weeks ago. But last Saturday she trailed home sixth at this grade, beaten out of sight in 28.14, her worst run all year. Her mid-June solo spin here was the fastest practice run of anyone in this race, very quick away in 27.12, so the machinery works when the mood takes her. Impossible to dismiss on the spring form, impossible to trust on the latest. One bad run is forgivable — but at these trip-times she needs to bounce back several lengths' worth.
Arrives off a 60-rated win at B2 grade on Sunday — his first crack at the trip in a graded race, and he aced it, clocking 27.26 after a summer of sharp sprinting at D1. His career win rate of 38% is the best in this field, he breaks like a sprinter, and his practice spins here have all been fast. The step to B1 is another rise, and his sprinter's style means he'll be attacking from the outside early with the possibility of paying for it late over the longer trip. Genuine improver, but this is a deeper race than Sunday's.
Key insight: Tiny sample at B1 (117 runs) but trap 2 has won 45.5% of them — ten wins from twenty-two. The fastest dog in the field wins 27.3%. With the ratings scrambled at this grade, the draw stat and the clock are the compass.
