A cracking little five-dog contest stuffed with dogs who've been running in far better races than B2. The 460-metre trip here has modest history at this grade — a couple of hundred runs, so trends are leans rather than laws — but trap 5 has been the standout box at nearly 30% with trap 3 the graveyard at 11%. Romeo Elio, the fastest dog in the field and fresh from open-class company, is unfortunately parked in that graveyard box and his racing manners can be hit or miss. Contempt has the sharpest opening strides and should show the way early from the rail, with Salacres Boris — placed in almost two-thirds of his career starts — stalking from trap 2. Baran Tombstone, freshened by a break and sitting on two rapid practice spins over exactly this course and distance, gets the golden draw out wide and arrives with the classiest form in the race.
The class act, freshened up and dropped in grade. Through the spring he was holding his own in A2 and A3 company over 500 metres — never rating below 48 in six months with a peak of 71 in open sprint class — and that's a different world to B2. He's been off since early June, but the kennel has kept him busy: two rapid practice spins over this exact course and distance, including a 27.18 leading throughout, which only Romeo Elio's best beats in this field. He lands the standout draw too — trap 5 has won nearly three in ten of these. He's a slow starter who needs things to unfold in front of him, and race fitness is a fair question, but the ability gap is real.
On raw ability, the best dog in the race — the fastest time in the field at 27.05, the top speed figure, and a 76-rated second in open company over this exact trip three weeks ago. He was fifth in another open here on Sunday, rating 62, which would still win most B2 contests. But there are two big buts: trap 3 has been the worst box at this grade, winning barely one race in nine, and his form swings wildly — brilliant one week, beaten at short odds the next, with a history of handslips in his schooling. Genius and chaos in the same package.
Won at this grade and trip in mid-June with a 60-rated run and franked the form with a career-best 62 in open sprint company last Saturday, so he's thriving. His best of 27.15 is second only to Romeo Elio here, his opening sectional of 1.30 is the sharpest in the field, and the rail box has been a decent one at this grade. The only quibbles: his third here a fortnight ago showed he isn't unbeatable at the level, and he can be a beat slow to stride despite the strong early figures once running.
The consistency king — placed in 64% of his career starts, second at this grade and trip last Saturday, and he owns serious back form: a 78-rated win at A4 in April and a 68 at A3 in June. His average times at this trip are actually the tidiest in the field. The knock is the style — he gives the leaders first run and relies on finishing strongly, and in a five-dog race with less traffic trouble to profit from, patient runners have fewer accidents to exploit.
Essentially a sprinter having another crack at the middle trip. His one graded run at this distance was a creditable 59-rated third in open company in June, but his last two sprint runs were beaten efforts rated in the 20s, and his only clock at this trip — 27.63 — is the slowest in the field. Won two sprints at D2 in June, so there's dash in there, but the evidence he carries it an extra 190 metres against this class of rival is thin.
Key insight: Small sample at B2 over 460m (216 runs) but trap 5 has been the box to own at 29.7% from 37 runs, with traps 3 and 4 well adrift at 11-14%. Treat as a lean, not gospel — the racing here is between class droppers whose form defies the grade.
