Doncaster's top sprint grade sees trap six with a big edge in the numbers so far, over 37% winners against trap two's 12.5%, though the sample at this level is still building. Mustang Mile races from that exact box and does so as the type who simply goes forward and stays there — leading from the break in both of her last two starts and hard to pass once she's in front. Sullane Danny also races from out wide and likes to be involved early, so those two could set a fierce gallop together, with the more patient types like Ruffian Blue and Qwerty ready to pounce if it gets messy up front. If Mustang Mile gets the lead she's had the last twice, this looks hard to prevent.
Simply too sharp for recent opposition — two wins on the bounce, both at long odds-on, leading from the break each time and never looking troubled. Before that, a second at the top grade and a win at this level too. She's the fastest dog in this field by a distance on the clock, matching her own personal best last time out, and drawn in trap six, which has produced well over a third of the winners in this grade so far. Her trainer is flying at these conditions, close to 30%, and her course-and-distance record backs it all up at 40% from ten runs. Everything stacks the same way here — the clock, the draw, the trainer and the recent form.
A big price on paper belies a genuinely smart form line — two wins at this grade and a further win at an intermediate level, with the only blemish a third last time out after missing the break and getting crowded on the run-in, easy to forgive. Second-fastest in this field on the clock and races from out wide with a habit of getting there late, having the highest average recent performance rating in the entire field. Trap five has a fair record at this grade. His trainer's record here is solid without being spectacular. The one genuine threat to the selection if the traffic clears for him this time.
A complete unknown at this trip — every recent start has come over 450, 483 or even 661 metres, staying trips a world away from tonight's sprint, and there's no recorded run at 275 metres to judge her on at all. She does have a win at 661 metres and has been competitive against much stronger opposition than anything in this field, so there's clearly ability there. Whether that translates to the minimum trip is the big unknown — closers who thrive over further can struggle to adapt to a race over in seventeen seconds. Trap one is a fair draw if she has any early speed at all. Impossible to assess with confidence; the market will likely know far more than the form book here.
Won well last time out, leading soon after the break, but the form before that has been up and down — a fifth after missing the break, a third at a higher grade, and a couple more wins mixed in against that. Fourth-fastest on the clock but drawn in trap four, which has actually been a productive box at this grade, over 27% winners. His course-and-distance record is excellent at four wins from eight. Shows good early pace when he gets away cleanly, which is the one recurring theme in the runs that haven't gone his way. Capable of running into the frame again on his day.
Two wins from her last three starts, showing early pace and racing up with the leaders throughout. Third-fastest in the field on the clock, not far off the pace-setters. The drawback is trap two, statistically the weakest box in this grade so far at just 12.5% winners — a real structural obstacle. Shares a trainer with the selection, and that yard is in excellent form at these conditions. Fast enough to trouble the front two but the draw is working hard against her tonight.
A fast-early type who tends to lose ground in the closing stages, and the recent form has been mixed — a fourth last time out at 450 metres, a step up in trip that doesn't play to his strengths. Slowest dog in this field on the clock and his course-and-distance record is modest, one win from seven at this trip. His trainer hasn't had a winner at these conditions from a small sample. Others have considerably stronger claims tonight on both the clock and the recent form.
Key insight: Trap six has been the dominant draw in this top grade so far at over 37% winners, and it's exactly where the fastest, best-rated dog in the race — on the back of two dominant wins — happens to be drawn.
