Doncaster's 450 metres plays fairer than most UK circuits — the run to the first bend doesn't punish the wider draws the way tighter tracks do, and tonight's split is modest: trap one has been the pick of the boxes in this grade at just under 22% winners, trap four the weakest at just over 18%. There's no out-and-out pace merchant in this six — Trewmount Fury, Delightful Molly and Dark Eddie are all balanced, all-round types rather than confirmed leaders, while Have You Heard and Cockneyokoronkwo prefer to settle off the pace and work through. Expect a workmanlike gallop rather than a speed duel, with whoever travels smoothest through the pack in the closing stages picking up the spoils. Trewmount Fury looks the type to travel best of all on the clock, and if he gets a clear run from trap two, the rest may simply not see which way he went.
Finished only fifth last time out, but that's one blip in an otherwise progressive campaign — two wins and a second from his last five before that, and the form has generally been on the way up rather than down. He's the fastest dog in this field on the clock, with the best average time and a personal best that nothing else here can live with, and his course-and-distance record is outstanding: four wins from ten runs at this trip and track, a 40% strike rate well above what the raw trap figures would suggest. Trainer Gaskin isn't the busiest name in this grade but wins comfortably above a fifth of the time at this course and distance. The one they all have to beat — the ratings, the clock and the record at this trip all point the same way.
Consistent without being spectacular — three placed finishes from her last four starts, including a game effort last time out when forced wide early. She's second-fastest in the field on the clock and drawn in trap four, historically the weakest box at this trip, which is the one mark against her. What she does have is a trainer in outstanding form: Watson's record at this course, distance and grade is the best of any handler in the race at just under 30%, and with three runners in this heat, the booking looks deliberate. The most dangerous runner on paper if the draw doesn't undo her.
The form book tells an interesting story here — this one was racing in A2 and even Open Race company at 483 metres just a few weeks ago, considerably stronger opposition than anything in this B2 heat, and drops back in trip to 450 metres today too. The obvious question is whether the tougher grade has blunted the raw speed, because the clock says he's the slowest of this six right now, some way behind his own personal best. He does have the best-performing trap in the field to work with and a fair record when he has raced at this course and distance. If the class edge tells, he could easily outrun his current position; if the sharper company simply hasn't sharpened him up, he's up against it against fresher, in-form types.
Won three in a row through the spring but those victories came at lower grades — B3, B4 and even B6 company — and since stepping back up to this level she's managed only two mid-table finishes from her last two starts, including one where she was slowly away. Not the quickest in this field on the clock and drawn in the middle, though she does carry a strong record at this course and distance with three wins from six starts here. Trainer Watson, who also saddles two others in this race, has a fine record at these conditions. Respected on the strength of that course form, but the recent grade-matched efforts haven't matched the earlier hype.
Tends to race wide throughout, a pattern that shows up in almost every recent form line, and that habit costs ground at a track where efficient running matters more than raw speed off the bend. He's third-fastest on the clock and has been competitive without winning recently — two places from his last three. Trainer Watson, who fields three runners in this race, has one of the strongest records at this course and distance in the field. An each-way interest rather than a first-choice, with the wide-running tendency the main concern.
Key insight: Speed matters most in this grade — the fastest dog in the field wins roughly one in four races here, edging out the top-rated dog on raw ratings alone.
