Kilcohan Park's 525 metres favours trap 3 at every grade, though at A5 the edge softens — trap 3 wins 20% from 145 runs while traps 5 and 6 are the dead draws at around 10%. The telling quirk at this grade is that the top-rated dog wins only 15% here while the second-rated wins 20% — upsets by the next-best dog are the norm, not the exception, so blindly siding with the obvious one has been a losing game. And the obvious one is Slaneyside Solas, a chronic bridesmaid who has finished second in five of his last six. Ballygur Diva, the second-rated runner, has the same early-paced profile, a better winning habit at the trip, and fits exactly the profile that scores at this grade. Both like to race prominently, so expect these two fighting it out from the first bend with Crack On Sadie running on late.
The form profile that actually wins at this grade. She has three wins and seven placings from ten course and distance starts — the best winning record in the field at the trip — and she has been running with credit in stronger A4 company all summer before this drop to A5. All graded form, no trials. At this grade the second-rated dog historically outperforms the top-rated one (20% against 15%), and she is precisely that second-string with matching early pace. Trap 2 is only average here, but her habit of being on the premises — second in 29.50 last time — gives her the edge over a rival who keeps finding one too good.
The best dog in the race on raw figures — top average rating at 70, fastest clock ranking, and he has been running against better in A4 all season. The problem is the finishing line: second in five of his last six starts, repeatedly headed near the line or outstayed late. All graded form, ten course and distance runs with seven placings but only two wins. Trap 1 is fair at this grade (15.2%), unlike at A4 and A6 where it is a graveyard. He will be right there again — he always is — but his record says another gallant second is the likeliest outcome.
Gets the golden trap 3 draw, which wins 20% at this grade, and he has led early in several recent races — but the form has tailed off: one win from ten course and distance starts and he was crowded when fifth last time. All graded form between A4 and A5. His 29.33 best shows he can go fast enough on his day; the draw gives him a first-bend chance if he uses it.
Won back-to-back A6 races in June, making all in 29.57, but he was never sighted when sixth on his return to this grade last time and his overall A5 record is patchy. All graded form, seven course and distance runs with two wins. The slowest in the field on the clock rankings bar one, and trap 4 is middling here. Needs to lead and he has rivals with more early dash.
In good heart — a win in 29.55 and a second in her last four at this grade, and she ran on well for third last time after a slow start. All graded form bar one distance experiment, nine course and distance runs. The pattern is clear though: she gives the field a start and relies on a strong finish, and trap 5 wins only 10.6% at this grade — the second-worst box. Place claims again; winning needs the leaders to tie up.
Dropping from A4, where he was struggling, and his last win came at A7 grade back in May. Slowly away in his last two, and drawn in trap 6, which wins just 10.2% at this grade — the worst box. All graded form, nine course and distance runs with one win. His ratings have been sliding gently for two months and the draw does him no favours whatsoever.
Key insight: A5 is the upset grade here: top-rated dogs win 15.2%, second-rated 20.1%. The pick is the second-string with the best C&D win record; the obvious one is second in 5 of his last 6.
