A cracking, wide-open A4 to close out the morning's better races. Limerick's 525 metres rewards the stopwatch, and at this grade trap 3 (22.5%) and trap 1 (21.7%) are the boxes to hold while traps 4 and 6 win barely one in nine from 1,121 runs. The complication: the three fastest dogs in this field are scattered across good and bad draws. Snuggie Benny gets the favoured rail with the second-best speed rating and a sharp 29.01 clocking, fresh off a third at A3. Airfield Thunder owns the fastest time in the race — 28.91 — and the best average form, but he's stuck in the trap 4 graveyard. Ballinabola Suki holds the top speed rating from the best box of all, though she's barely raced here. Six in-form, closely matched runners; the draw is the tiebreaker, and it points to the rail.
The cleanest combination of current form, speed and draw in a race full of near-misses. Third at A3 grade last week rated 71 — a level above today's — with a 29.01 best time and the second-highest speed rating in the field. He's been racing exclusively against A2 and A3 company for months, so this is a genuine class drop, and he lands trap 1, which wins 21.7% at this grade. The knock is his course record: one win from ten at the trip, and Myles Cummins' kennel runs at a modest 10%. But no other in-form runner here combines a favoured box with his clock. In a race this tight, that's the edge.
On the book he's the best dog in the race: a 70 average performance leads the field, his 28.91 best time is the fastest here, and he was third here last week rated 67 with 76 and 77-rated runs earlier in the summer against A3 and A2 company. Two wins from ten at the trip. Then the draw undoes it — trap 4 wins 11.2% at this grade, the worst statistic in the race. He's the type to prove a trap stat wrong, because the engine is clearly the biggest here, but history says dogs from that box spend the first bend in traffic. The danger, and a strong one.
A model of A4 consistency — ten straight runs at this grade, ratings mostly in the 60s and 70s, and placed in four of her ten course and distance starts with a win. Her 29.13 best time is competitive too. But her last run rated 56 in fifth with a 30.01 clocking, her slowest for months, and Michael O'Brien's kennel wins at just 6%. Reliable enough to be in the frame; short of the spark to beat four faster rivals.
The top speed rating in the race, a 29.19 clocking she matched exactly last time out, and now the best box at the grade — the raw ingredients are all here, and two models make her their pick. The hesitations: she's only run twice over this course and distance (one placing), her recent form has come at A3/A4 elsewhere, and she hasn't raced in a month. A dog this fast from trap 3 could easily win; the thin local record and the layoff are why she's third choice rather than first.
An 88-rated run five starts back is the biggest figure on anyone's card here, and he's won twice over the course and distance. But the trend is wrong: sixth last time rated 45, and only one run above 68 since spring. Trap 5 wins just 12.8% at this grade. Two condition-based models side with him on his course pedigree, and if the May version reappears he wins — the July version has been well held twice running.
Second here last week rated 63 and placed in five of her last six runs — she turns up every single week, with an 86-rated peak earlier in the summer against A3 company. Two wins and five placings from ten course and distance starts. The wide box wins only 11.2% at this grade though, and her best time gives the front three a couple of lengths. Her consistency makes her the safest place bet in the race; the draw and the clock cap her win chance.
Key insight: A4 at Limerick 525m: trap 3 (22.5%) and trap 1 (21.7%) are the boxes to hold; traps 4 and 6 win 11.2%. The three fastest dogs here are split across good and bad draws — the draw is the tiebreaker in a race the clock can't separate.
