The card signs off with its weakest and least exposed field — an A7 over Limerick's 525 metres where the trap draw is close to meaningless (every box wins between 15% and 18% at this grade) and the clock, as ever at this track, is the compass. Half this field barely has a form line: three runners have three or fewer career starts. Captains Pick is the obvious anchor — improving with each of his three runs, second at A8 last time, and carrying a speed rating only Rathanny Rose betters. Rose herself is the fastest dog in the race on the clock and rating, but she's been off since mid-June and her form figures are modest. Knoppogue Carrie has had one run in three months. With so little established form, take the improver over the puzzle: Captains Pick to keep progressing, Rose the threat if she's fit and firing.
The one dog in this field heading somewhere. Three career runs, each better than the last — 28, then 42, then a 49-rated second at A8 a fortnight ago — and he steps up to A7 with the second-best speed rating in the race and times that only Rathanny Rose beats. He's race-fit, the only fancied runner here with a recent outing, and his 29.97 clocking last time showed the improvement is on the stopwatch too, not just the form figures. Three runs is a thin book and this grade is never bankable, but an improving, match-fit youngster against rusty and unproven rivals is the sensible side of a weak race.
The fastest dog in the race on both counts — top speed rating and a 29.84 best time nothing here can match — and at a track where speed is the strongest predictor, that matters. The rest of the card is less convincing: five career runs with a best finish of third, a 59-rated peak, no placings from her only course and distance start, and a five-week absence since a fifth in mid-June. The engine is clearly the best in the field; the question is whether an unproven, rusty dog uses it. The obvious danger, and the win threat if she breaks well.
Two career runs, a sixth and a well-beaten effort, with ratings of 42 and 30 and the second-slowest best time in the field. She hasn't raced in five weeks either. Two runs is far too little to write anyone off for good, but nothing she's shown so far — on the clock or in the form book — suggests she's ready to trouble even a modest A7. Watch for improvement before taking an interest.
One career run — a fifth over 350 metres at sprint grade six weeks ago — and now he tries 525 metres for the first time. There is simply no evidence he stays this trip: no distance form, the slowest time in the field from his sprint outing, and the lowest speed rating. First-time distance runners can surprise, but backing one with a single modest sprint to his name is guesswork. One to watch, not to back.
A single career run — a 47-rated fourth here in late April — and nothing since: a three-month absence that makes her the biggest mystery in the field. Her one clocking of 30.04 and a decent speed rating hint at ability, and one of the models actually makes her its pick. But one run twelve weeks ago is a rumour, not a form line. If she's been readied at home she could outrun this assessment; there's just no evidence to bet on.
Two career runs rating 37 and 38, both well beaten, with the second-lowest speed rating in the field and a best time three lengths off the leading pair. He's also been absent since mid-June. Young dogs improve in jumps, so he's not condemned on two starts — but everything measurable currently places him at the rear of this field, and the wide box offers no help at this grade. Others make far more appeal.
Key insight: A7 at Limerick 525m: the flattest trap profile at the track (all boxes 15-18%) and a weak composite signal (17.8%). With half this field barely raced, current fitness and an improving curve outrank everything else.
