A5 over 525m at Curraheen is the grade where raw pace tells most: the fastest-rated dog in the field has won a remarkable 35% of these (68 runs) and the trap map is lopsided — trap 3 leads at 27%, trap 1 is strong at 23%, while traps 2 and 5 win fewer than one in ten between them. That frames this race neatly. Rosstemple Mac drops back from two runs at A4, owns both the best speed figure and the best performance average in the field, and draws the productive inside box. Edencurra Lion has the outright fastest career time (29.35) from trap 4 but has yet to win in four tries here. Serenity Lilly, in the plum trap 3, is only two runs into her career but ran a big rating of 61 when third last time — she's the improver who could make the pick work hard. Sophies Thunder and Midian Connie occupy the two dead boxes, which historically is close to a disqualifying handicap at this grade.
Drops back to A5 after two runs in tougher A4 company and immediately sets the standard: the best speed figure in the field, the best average performance (54), and the quickest average time — his runs cluster around 29.6 where most of these are nearer 29.9. His form line of 51-55-58-53-61 has never dipped below competitive, which is exactly the consistency you want at a grade where the fastest dog wins better than one in three. Sixth last time is easily forgiven at the higher grade. Trap 1 wins 23% here and suits a dog with his early dash. The one to beat.
The improver in the race. Just two runs into her career, but the latest was a rated-61 third at A6 — the single best performance figure anyone in this field has posted recently — and she now lands the best box on the track, a trap that wins 27% at this grade. Two runs is a thin sample and this is her first crack at A5, so she has to prove the debut spark wasn't a one-off, but the combination of a big recent rating and the golden draw makes her the obvious threat to the more exposed pick.
Only two career runs, the better of them a rated 49 fourth at A7 back in late May, so he's both unexposed and coming off a seven-week absence. The clock says he's not hopeless — 29.60 on debut form is respectable — but he's drawn in the worst box on the track for this grade, a trap that has produced one winner from every twelve runs. First-time improvers from bad draws are a tough combination to back; watching brief.
Owns the fastest career clocking in the race — 29.35, two lengths quicker than the pick's best — and that alone keeps him interesting. The rest is less convincing: four runs over course and distance without troubling the judge, an up-and-down form line that peaked at 54 last time when fifth, and a draw in trap 4 that wins only 13% at this grade. If he ever puts a clean race together at his best pace he wins this, but he's yet to show he can do it in traffic.
Arrives in decent heart, having finished second at A6 last time with a rating of 57 — her best in months and a clear step forward from the 33 she posted three runs back. The problem is geography: trap 5 has won fewer than one in ten of these, and her speed figure of 44 ranks near the bottom of the field, so she'd need both a career-best and a pile-up in front of her. Stepping up from A6 to A5 at the same time makes the task stiffer still.
The form is going the wrong way — ratings of 61 and 53 five and six runs back have given way to 38 and 31 in his last two, both well-beaten efforts at this grade. He has a sharp 29.40 career best and nine runs of course-and-distance experience, so the ability is in there somewhere, and trap 6 is a fair box at this grade at 18%. But nine attempts here without a win and the slowest speed figure in the field make him hard to recommend on anything but hope.
Key insight: Speed is everything at this grade: the fastest-rated dog wins 35.3% (68 runs) while the model's top-ranked pick manages only 18.3% — back the clock, not the blend. Trap 3 (27.1%) and trap 1 (23.3%) are the boxes; traps 2 (8.3%) and 5 (9.7%) are near write-offs.
