A7 grade at Mullingar's 525 metres is the hardest race on the card to call — the top-rated dog wins barely one in ten of these, so nobody's numbers can be taken at face value. Trap 1 is the best box at close to 17%, while trap 6 is a graveyard at just 6% from 145 runs — and that's exactly where the form dog landed. Salsa Joy won this grade last week with the best performance in this field by a distance and has two wins from six runs here, but she has to overcome the worst draw on the track. Knockmant Drew owns the fastest time in the race from trap 2 but keeps running below it, while Jaxx Tebow is the great bridesmaid of the grade — placed in half his ten course runs without ever winning one. If Salsa Joy gets squeezed early from the wide box, this becomes anyone's race.
The only dog in the race in genuine winning form — she took this grade last week with a performance rated 13 points clear of anything else in this field, and has now won two of her six runs over course and distance. The clock backs her up too: quickest last-time run and the best speed figure here. The one big problem is the draw. Trap 6 wins just 6% at this grade, the worst box on the track, and she'll need a clean first bend from out wide. Her form says she wins this; her box says tread carefully — hence the caution.
The great nearly-dog of this grade — placed in five of his ten course-and-distance runs, including second in three of his last four, without ever finding a way past the winner. He posts the best average time in the field and gets a decent box in trap 3, which wins around 16% at this level. Everything about his profile screams involved-at-the-finish; the question, as ever, is whether he finally gets his head in front. If the wide-drawn form pick gets crowded early, this is the obvious beneficiary.
The fastest dog in the race on his best clocking of 29.76 — a quarter of a second clear of the field — but he almost never runs to it, finishing last at this grade only last week. One second-place from eight course-and-distance runs tells the story, and trap 2 is a poor box here, winning under one in ten at this grade. Has hit a 63-rated run in the recent past so a big effort is in him somewhere; predicting when is the impossible part.
Ran one of her better races last time when third at this grade, and trap 5 is a fair box here at around 15%. But ten course-and-distance runs without a win and only one placing make her hard to back with confidence, and her average time is among the slowest in the field. She tends to be thereabouts without threatening the winner — another placing looks her ceiling unless the race falls apart in front of her.
Gets the best box in the race — trap 1 wins nearly 17% at this grade, the strongest draw on the card — but the form is going the wrong way, with three fifth-place finishes in his last four and the slowest last-time run in the field. One win from ten course-and-distance starts and a kennel that rarely troubles the judge complete a discouraging picture. The draw gives him a squeak if he pings the lids; everything else says no.
The weakest profile in the race — slowest best time, slowest average, and no wins from nine course-and-distance attempts. His last three runs have all been fifth or sixth, and even at a grade this open it's hard to build a case beyond the fact that strange things happen at A7. Trap 4 is a middling box here. Needs several to misfire in front of him.
Key insight: The least predictable grade at Mullingar: the top-rated dog wins only 10.6% (123 runs) — below every other rank. Trap 6 wins just 6.2% from 145 runs. No pre-race number separates this grade reliably.
