The feature race of the card and the best contest of the day. A2 at Mullingar's 525 metres is a small-sample grade — under 200 runs on the book, so trap figures are leans rather than gospel — but the pattern shows trap 2 as the pick of the boxes at 23% while traps 1, 5 and 6 have all struggled around the 10% mark, and the fastest dog on the clock has been the better guide than the ratings. This race pits two last-week winners against each other: Killeshil Ranger destroyed this grade with a 94-rated performance and owns both the fastest time in the field and the best sustained form, while Droopys Bugle ran a 97 to win his own A2 last week from the rail. Kuma Muezza has won half of her ten course runs but drew the coldest box, and Apache Gem has been placed in both his A2 starts. Whoever pings the lids from the middle likely controls this.
The classiest animal on the card. His average rating of 85 over ten runs towers over this field — he's hit 94, 96 and a perfect 100 within his last six starts, form built against A1 and top-level opposition, and he won this grade last week going away. He owns the fastest time in the race at 28.90 and the best average, has three wins and five placings from eight course-and-distance runs, and Vincent Lynch's runners win 30% of the time. Trap 3 has been a sound box at this grade. Genuinely hard to pick holes in.
The obvious danger and some will make him favourite. His 97-rated win at this grade last week was the single best performance by anyone in this field this month, and his 28.94 last-time clocking is the freshest fast time on show. The caveats: his form swings wildly — a 42 and a 62 sit alongside the 97 in his last six — and trap 1 has been a cold box at this grade, winning just one in ten. Daniel O'Reilly's kennel wins at a fair 27%. If he repeats last week's run he wins; his book says he repeats it about every third start.
The reliable one. Second in both his A2 starts, a winner twice at A4 before that, and placed in five of his seven course-and-distance runs — he almost never runs a bad race, with ratings of 65 or better in each of his last six. His 29.07 best leaves him a length or two shy of the two principals on raw pace, which is likely the difference between winning and placing here. Trap 4 is a fair box at this grade. The safest each-way play in the race.
Her course record demands respect — five wins from ten runs over this course and distance, the best strike rate in the field, including an A2 win just two starts back rated 94. But two of her last four have been rated in the 40s and 50s, and she's drawn in trap 5, which has produced the fewest winners of any box at this grade. On her best day she beats all of these; the draw and the inconsistency mean you're guessing which day this is.
Steps up sharply in class after an 84-rated win at A5 last week — his third course-and-distance win — and his 29.05 last time was quick for that level. But this is A2, three grades harder, against dogs who post those figures routinely. His previous form in A4 company was honest without winning, and trap 6 has been a poor box at this grade. Improving and fearless, but this asks a lot more than last week did.
Draws the best box in the race — trap 2 has won 23% at this grade, comfortably the strongest pattern — and Rosemary Price's 35% kennel is the best strike rate of any trainer here. That's the good news. The clock is the bad news: his best time is over a third of a second slower than the principals' and his last two runs at this grade brought a fourth and a fifth. He's won two of six course-and-distance starts, but both came at much lower grades. The box keeps him interesting; the engine looks short of this level.
Key insight: Small sample (189 runs) so treat patterns as leans: trap 2 best at 23.3%, traps 1/5/6 all near 10%. The fastest dog (27.6%) has been a better guide than the top-rated dog (21.9%) at this grade.
