A second helping of A3 over Mullingar's 525 metres, and the same structural rules apply: trap 4 is the golden box winning nearly one in four, trap 5 is the graveyard at 9%, and the clock is marginally the better guide than the ratings at this grade. This is arguably the deepest race on the card — four dogs with genuine winning claims. Drinane Pippa has the best sustained form in the field and a course record to dream about: four wins and seven placings from ten runs here. Phoenix Meg won this grade last week with the best single performance in the race but has drawn the coldest box on the track, while No Comet brings five straight runs rated 74 or better and the strongest kennel. Bandit Ella, a three-time course winner, completes a formidable quartet. Expect Pippa and Meg to fight it out with the fast-breaking types deciding early positions.
The most reliable profile in a deep race. Her course record is exceptional — four wins and seven placings from ten runs over this course and distance, including a hat-trick of wins earlier in the spring — and her average rating of 76 is the best in the field. She's been rated 66 or better in every one of her last six runs, finishing third and second in her last two at this grade, and she posts the best average time here. Others have flashier single figures; nobody matches her floor. She rarely runs a bad race and this track is her happy place.
Won this grade last week with an 89-rated performance — the best single run in this field — and brings the top speed figure plus a 29.06 best that only one dog here has bettered. Three wins from ten course-and-distance runs and plenty of A2-level experience earlier in the year round out a serious contender. The one black mark is a big one: trap 5 wins just 9% at Mullingar A3, the worst box on the track, and she's a fast starter who could get crowded from there. On talent she's the equal of the pick; the draw is why she's the danger instead.
Quietly compiling one of the best form books at the track — his last five runs read 74, 77, 78, 79, 83, capped by a win at A4 last week, and Rosemary Price's 35% kennel is the strongest in the race. The step back up to A3 holds no fears on those figures. What does is the geography: trap 6 wins under 12% at this grade, and only one win from nine course-and-distance runs suggests he finds ways not to finish first here. Impossible to dismiss, hard to make the pick from that box.
A three-time course-and-distance winner who was rated 92 as recently as three starts back — on her best form she wins this comfortably. But the last two outings brought a pair of fourth places with ratings drifting down to 56, and her last clocking was a full second off her best. In the frame in nine of ten runs here, so she's about as track-proven as they come, and the rail draw is fair at this grade. If she bounces back she's right there; the recent evidence just favours others.
Gets the best box on the track — trap 4 wins nearly one in four at this grade — and Vincent Lynch's 30% kennel doesn't send dogs out for exercise. She's won twice over this course and distance and hit an 87 rating four starts back, but her last three runs have been rated in the 50s and 60s and her recent times are nearly a second off her 29.10 best. The draw and the kennel give her a puncher's chance; the current form needs to step up two lengths.
Owns the fastest time in the race on paper at 29.03 — but she set it at Newbridge, and her two runs at this track have produced a fifth and a sixth with nothing to suggest the form travels. Her last clocking was the slowest in the field by some way, the ratings have been patchy since arriving from Newbridge, and her kennel wins about one race in sixteen. The raw ability that won A4s elsewhere is real; the evidence she can reproduce it at Mullingar isn't there yet.
Key insight: Trap 4 is the best box at 23.5% from 81 runs; trap 5 the worst at 9.0%. The fastest dog (24.6%) narrowly beats the top-rated dog (22.0%) as a signal at this grade.
