A3 at Mullingar's 525 metres has a clear structural lean: trap 4 is the standout box, winning nearly one in four from 81 runs, while trap 5 is the graveyard at 9% — and the fastest dog on the clock edges the top-rated dog as the better signal. This race, though, has one dog stacking almost everything. Delvin Man is the top-rated runner, owns the field's best speed figure and best average time, and has won three of his ten runs over this course and distance. Pat The Doc brings the fastest single clocking in the field at 28.98 and drops in from A1 and A2 company, so he's the class threat if he recaptures it, while Bawn Monk has been in the frame in seven of ten course runs but is saddled with the dead box in trap 5. Expect Delvin Man to be on the premises throughout with Pat The Doc finishing his race off strongest of the rest.
The complete package for this grade. Top-rated by a clear seven points, the best speed figure in the field, the best average time, and three wins plus five placings from ten runs over this course and distance — a 30% strike rate that few at this track can match. His last run was a quiet fifth at A4, but the four before it read third, second, first, and he's been mixing it in A2 company within the last couple of months, so today's grade is comfortably within reach. He does everything well and does it here.
The class of the race on the clock — his 28.98 best is the only sub-29 time in the field, set against the A1 and A2 dogs he's been racing all summer. He hasn't won lately, but finishing fourth and fifth behind top-graders is honest work, and dropping to A3 for Brian Reilly, whose runners win a third of the time, looks a deliberate move. His ratings have never dipped below 62 in six runs. If he transfers even most of that higher-grade speed today, he's the one who beats the pick.
The consistency king — in the frame in seven of his ten course-and-distance runs with three wins, and second at this grade only last week. He's been rated 72 or better in four of his last five, form good enough to win this. The problem is the draw: trap 5 wins just 9% at Mullingar A3, the worst box on the track, and his last clocking was nearly a second off his best. Deserves respect on form; the box makes his path the hardest in the race.
Capable of the spectacular — he hit ratings of 87 and 81 when winning back-to-back races last month, and two wins from ten course-and-distance runs prove he finishes the job when things click. The trouble is the other days: a 48 and two sixth-place finishes also litter his recent book, so you never quite know which version turns up. Trap 3 is a solid box at this grade at 17%. If the good one shows up he troubles them all; the average one finishes mid-division.
Lands the statistically golden box — trap 4 wins nearly one in four at this grade, the best draw on the track — but he's the least likely occupant to cash it in. No wins from six course-and-distance runs, the slowest last-time clocking in the field at 30.36, and a kennel winning about one in eight. He did run a 71-rated second at A5 two starts back, so he's not without ability, but this is a tougher race than that one. The draw flatters his chance.
The wild card. His book is a rollercoaster — a 91-rated win at this grade three starts back, surrounded by efforts in the 30s and 40s, and his average time is over a second slower than his best. Rosemary Price's runners win 35% of the time, comfortably the best kennel strike rate in this race, which stops him being dismissed outright. But trap 6 wins under 12% at this grade and predicting his good days has defeated everyone so far. One for the brave at a price.
Key insight: Trap 4 is the best box at 23.5% from 81 runs; trap 5 the worst at 9.0%. The fastest dog (24.6%) narrowly beats the top-rated dog (22.0%) as a signal at this grade.
