A6 at Mullingar's 525 metres is a grade where the usual signals go quiet — the top-rated dog wins only 18.5% of these and, unusually for this track, the fastest dog on the clock does no better at 14%, so nothing separates these fields reliably. Trap 2 is the best box at 18.6% and trap 6 the worst at 9.3%. Loudest Whisper sets the standard on ratings and times — quickest speed figure, best average time, and seconds in each of his last two — but he's yet to win in seven tries over this course and distance. Bawn Knockard is the improving young dog with a win and two seconds from four starts here, and Kuma Bushra arrives off a big second in A4 company, two grades above this. With the numbers this tightly bunched, a clean break will settle most arguments.
Sets the standard in an open race. Best speed figure in the field, best average time by two lengths' worth, and he matched his career-best 29.70 last week when second at this grade — his second runner-up finish on the bounce. The knock is obvious: seven course-and-distance runs without a win, and at a grade where no number separates fields reliably, a habitual second is a risky favourite. But he's the only dog here combining top ratings with current form, and if he breaks level from trap 5 the race is his to lose.
The improving youngster and main danger. Just four career runs — all over this course and distance — and they've yielded a win at A7 and two placings, including a solid second at this grade last week. His 29.77 last time was a personal best, so the arrow is pointing up, and trap 3 is a fair box here. Four runs is a thin book and the pick has better established figures, but this is exactly the profile that wins open A6 races: young, unexposed and getting quicker.
The class angle. Ran a 71-rated second in A4 company last week — two grades above tonight's level and comfortably the best single performance in this field. The catch is everything before it: her three earlier runs were rated in the 30s and 40s, including a last-place finish at A5, so it's one big run against three quiet ones from just four starts. Trap 4 is a below-par box at this grade. If last week was the real her, she wins; the record is too thin to bank on it.
Arrives on a high after winning at A7 last week with a 70-rated performance, and her 29.67 best is actually the fastest clocking in this field. Two wins from ten course-and-distance runs show she can finish the job, which is more than some here can say. The problem is the draw — trap 6 wins barely one in eleven at this grade, the worst box on the track — and this is a step up from the grade she's been winning at. Dangerous if she gets a clean run wide, but the box is a real anchor.
Gets the plum draw — trap 2 is the best box at this grade, winning nearly 19% — and ran his best race in a while when third at A7 last time. But the bigger picture is bleak: six course-and-distance runs without a single placing, and his ratings have been stuck in the 40s and 50s all summer. Ian Reilly's kennel ticks over without setting the track alight. The draw earns him respect; the form doesn't.
Hard to make a case. Her third at this grade last week was a step back in the right direction after a string of poor efforts, and she did win at A5 five starts back with a 77-rated run that proves ability exists. But she's the slowest dog in the field on best time and average, her last clocking was the worst here, and her kennel wins about one race in twenty-five. Trap 1 is a fair box at this grade; she needs much more than a fair box.
Key insight: A quiet-signal grade: top-rated wins 18.5% (119 runs) and — unlike every other Mullingar grade — the fastest dog wins only 13.8%. Trap 2 best at 18.6%, trap 6 worst at 9.3%. Genuinely open racing.
