Newcastle's 480m trip has a reputation as a fair test, but the data shows a genuine first-bend edge worth 23.5% of winners track-wide, and this A4 in particular splits along trap lines rather than the trap 5 bias the venue usually shows - here it's trap 1 doing the damage at 21.4% with trap 5 actually the weakest box in this specific grade. The long home straight means closers are not punished the way they would be at a tighter circuit, which plays into Canny Striker's hands - she has the best turn of foot in the race and a closing ratio that suggests she'll be finishing fastest of all. Bramble Cat, drawn in the favoured trap, has been racing at this exact track and trip for months and knows how to get the job done from the front third of the field. Whitehills Logan has the sharpest getaway of the six and could dictate for a way, but her closing figures suggest she'll be vulnerable if the pace holds up. Royal Navy is up against it from the widest box with the slowest recent times in the field.
The fastest dog in this field on recent times and the one with the best average performance rating too - a rare case of the two strongest predictors pointing the same way. Won last time out and has finished first or second in each of her last three starts, with a very strong closing sprint that should suit Newcastle's long run to the line. She is stepping up from the grade she's been winning at, which is the one note of caution, but the form and the raw pace both say she's up to it. The one they all have to beat on pace alone.
Drawn in the box that's been the strongest performer in this grade at Newcastle over 480m, and she's raced here so often lately that she knows every blade of grass. Two wins from her last six starts at this exact track and trip, with a couple of third-place finishes most recently that still put her firmly in the frame. The second-fastest recent time in the field and a proven finisher from the front of the pack. If the pace up front folds even slightly, she's the type to pick up the pieces.
Sharpest away of the six and drawn in the second-best trap in this grade. Has been in the frame in each of her last six starts including three wins, and finished runner-up last time out. Tends to lead early but has shown she can lose ground late, so if the closers get organised behind her she could be run down close home. Still has to be respected on sheer consistency.
Won impressively last time out and the form before that reads well too, but two starts before that were over a much shorter trip and shouldn't be read into this test. Drawn in what's normally Newcastle's best box overall, but in this particular grade that trap has actually been the weakest performer, winning under 17% of the time. Quick enough away but tends to weaken in the closing stages, which could leave her exposed on this longer home straight.
Has shown a big performance in the past - a wide-margin win a few starts back proves the ability is there - but the last two runs have been well below that level and the times have been the slowest in this field by some way. The data also suggests this particular trap simply doesn't suit him, historically one of his weakest draws. Others have much stronger claims on both recent form and box.
Key insight: Trap 1 is the best box in A4 grade at Newcastle over 480m, winning 21.4% from 351 runs, while trap 5 - normally the strongest trap at this track overall - drops to the weakest position in this grade at just 16.6%. The top-rated dog only edges the second-rated by three points, so this is not a race where the model dominates.
