Another 480m A4 at Newcastle where trap 1 has been the most productive box this grade (21.4%) but the gap to the rest is nowhere near as stark as at some venues, and the long home straight here means the fading dogs up front are regularly picked off late. Bramble Revel is the pick on raw ability - the best average performance figure in the race and a genuine closer who should be finishing fastest as they hit the line. Blackhouse Tom and Droopys Renee both have the gate speed to be involved early but neither has shown anything in the way of a finishing kick recently, so they'll want this one to be over quickly. Alnwick River has produced the single best individual performance of anyone in this field a couple of runs back and matches the pick for pace, but he's drawn in one of the weaker boxes for this grade.
Carries the best average performance rating of anyone in this line-up and does it as a genuine closer, which should suit the long run to the line at Newcastle. Been consistently competitive across her last six starts without a bad run in there, hitting a peak of 72 three starts back. Drawn just outside the best box but that shouldn't be a problem given how she finishes her races. The one with the strongest overall claim.
Produced the single best individual performance of any runner in this field two starts back, rating 78, and matches the fastest recent time in the race too. Races as an all-rounder and has been a model of consistency, rarely running a bad race. The trap is the obstacle - this has been one of the weaker boxes in this grade - but on ability alone he's right in this.
Drawn in the trap that's produced most winners in this grade, and she was third in this exact class and distance last time out. But the raw figures are the softest in this field and she doesn't have much of a track record at this course and trip beyond her recent runs. The draw gives her a chance but she needs the pace up front to be modest.
Quick into stride and drawn in the second-best box for this grade, but the closing figures tell a worrying story - he simply has no finishing kick and tends to lose all the ground he makes early. Hit a career-best of 73 a couple of starts back which shows the raw ability is there. Needs to either lead all the way or find he's too far clear to be caught, both tough asks in this company.
The sharpest away of the six and boasts the best first-bend figures in the field, so she should be handily placed early. Like Blackhouse Tom though, she tends to fade once the sprint is on, with essentially no closing speed to call on. A career-best of 73 six starts back shows what she's capable of, and her average performance is the second-highest in the race, but the fade is the concern against closers like the pick.
Shares the fastest recent time in the field and races as an all-rounder capable of racing on the pace or coming from behind. Hit a peak of 73 a couple of starts back and her form has been reasonably steady since, if unspectacular last time out. The draw is the drawback - this has been the weakest box in this grade at Newcastle, which takes some of the shine off her pace credentials.
Key insight: A4 grade at Newcastle 480m is a relatively flat trap profile outside trap 1 and trap 3 - the top-rated dog only edges the second by around three points, so this is a race where genuine form and pace edges matter more than the draw.
