Another blink-and-miss-it 245-metre dash where early speed settles everything — the fastest dog at these conditions wins 42.9%, and the wide boxes are the place to be, trap 6 winning a third of these races while trap 2 takes barely one in fifteen. Onyago Giorgio owns the fastest time in the race and breaks sharply; over this trip his tendency to weaken late is irrelevant because the race is over before it bites. The main threat comes from the outside: Westfield Aida is the course specialist from the best box with four wins from nine here, though her recent form has cooled noticeably. Fruity Licious is the perennial runner-up who keeps hitting the frame, while two of the field are 435-metre dogs trying the minimum trip for the first time.
The fastest dog in the race — his 15.14 best is the sharpest time in the field and he matched it on his most recent sprint, backed by the top speed rating, and the quickest dog at these conditions wins better than four in ten. Won a sprint at this grade here in May and has placed in two more of his four course-and-distance dashes. He breaks fast, and while he can weaken late over four bends, 245 metres is over far too quickly for that to matter. The middle draw is fair. He sets the standard.
The course specialist — four wins and five places from nine course-and-distance starts, including a hat-trick of sprint wins in early June, and drawn in the best box in the race: trap 6 wins a third of these D5 dashes. The worry is the here and now: sixth, fourth and third in her last three with her times slipping, and her latest run was half a second off her best. If the early-June version turns up she wins; the last-month version comes up short.
The definition of consistent without converting — no wins from ten course-and-distance runs but placed in most of them, including the frame in five of her last six. Her best time of 15.17 is a match for anything here except the selection, and she matched it last time out. Strong place claims once again; winning claims need someone else's mistake at the traps.
A 435-metre performer trying the minimum trip for the first time, with no sprint form to judge him on. He won at A7 grade over the full trip three weeks ago so the ability is real, but he is drawn in the graveyard box — trap 2 wins just 6.7% at this grade — and sprinting is a specialist's game where a slow first stride is fatal to your chance. An experiment to watch, not to back.
Holds a strong box — trap 4 wins 28.6% at this grade — but the recent sprint form is thin: third and sixth in his two runs here this summer, with his better sprint efforts dating back over a year to 270 metres elsewhere. He matched his best time last time out, which hints at a spark, but he needs a career-best to trouble the front two on the clock.
Another middle-distance dog dropping to the dash for the first time, and his recent form gives little encouragement — sixth, fifth and sixth over 435 metres with ratings sliding steadily since early June. No sprint times to his name and a middling box. Hard to make any case beyond kennel confidence and the hope that a change of trip sparks something.
Key insight: The fastest-rated dog wins 42.9% of D5 sprints here (42 runs); trap 6 wins 33.3% (24 runs) and trap 2 just 6.7%.
