But he is drawn in a quiet box at 14.1%, his best time trails the principals, and he is still working his way back after a long winter layoff. An improver to keep on the radar rather than back today.

In form — won a D4 sprint two starts back and chased home the winner at this grade last week — and drawn in trap 3, the second-best box at 23.1%. A versatile sort who has also been winning over the full trip this summer. He doesn't own the raw early speed of the selection, but his consistency, the draw and the best average time in the field make him a genuine player.

Owns the fastest best time in the race at 14.67, which earns respect — but everything else is against her: the worst box at this grade at 13.7%, and scrappy form with one bright 58-rated effort buried among a string of much quieter runs. The time says she can; the pattern of her racing says she probably won't.

The best box in the race — trap 6 wins 29.3% at this grade — and he franked his ability with a 75-rated third in open sprint company last Saturday, clearly his best run in months. The snag is his style: slow into stride and reliant on a late dive, which is a losing pattern over 245 metres at a track where the leader so rarely comes back. The draw and the class give him a squeak; the way he races takes most of it back.
