A 245-metre dash at D3 grade where the draw data shouts wide — trap 6 wins 29.3% of these, with trap 3 next best at 23.1% and trap 5 the graveyard at 13.7%. It is a genuinely competitive sprint with six dogs separated by a handful of rating points. Knockduff Don is the fastest away in the field by a wide margin, and over a trip this short the leader almost never comes back — his late-race weakening simply doesn't have time to bite. Goldcash Jack brings the top rating and the best speed figure but a maddening record of ten course runs without a win. Conscience has the golden box and fresh open-class form but gives them all a start, which is a losing pattern at this trip.
The fastest breaker in the field by a distance, and that is the single most important weapon over 245 metres, where the race is won and lost in the first three seconds. His 14.70 best time is within a whisker of the fastest here, he won two sprints in better D2 company in June, and he has twice run third in open-class sprints recently — including a 76-rated effort last Saturday, the best single performance anyone in this field has produced this month. He weakens late over longer trips, but this trip is over before that matters. Dropping in grade with the best early pace is the winning formula here.
The top-rated dog with the fastest speed figure and a best time of 14.69 — and a course-and-distance record that drives punters to despair: ten runs, no wins, five places. He has been running solidly in better D2 company, hitting the frame repeatedly, so the drop in grade is the perfect excuse to finally convert. The numbers say he should; the record says he'll find one too quick again.
Won at D4 three weeks ago and was running in open company over 220 metres at Sunderland last autumn, so there is more ability here than the grade suggests. But he is drawn in a quiet box at 14.1%, his best time trails the principals, and he is still working his way back after a long winter layoff. An improver to keep on the radar rather than back today.
In form — won a D4 sprint two starts back and chased home the winner at this grade last week — and drawn in trap 3, the second-best box at 23.1%. A versatile sort who has also been winning over the full trip this summer. He doesn't own the raw early speed of the selection, but his consistency, the draw and the best average time in the field make him a genuine player.
Owns the fastest best time in the race at 14.67, which earns respect — but everything else is against her: the worst box at this grade at 13.7%, and scrappy form with one bright 58-rated effort buried among a string of much quieter runs. The time says she can; the pattern of her racing says she probably won't.
The best box in the race — trap 6 wins 29.3% at this grade — and he franked his ability with a 75-rated third in open sprint company last Saturday, clearly his best run in months. The snag is his style: slow into stride and reliant on a late dive, which is a losing pattern over 245 metres at a track where the leader so rarely comes back. The draw and the class give him a squeak; the way he races takes most of it back.
Key insight: Trap 6 dominates D3 sprints at 29.3% (75 runs). The top-rated dog wins 28.4% and the two fastest speed-ranked dogs win 27.5% and 29.6% — pace and rating both matter here.
