The 500 trip at Tralee is a specialist's distance, and at A3 grade the draw pattern from the hundred-or-so runs on record leans hard to the middle-outside: trap 4 leads everything at 25%, trap 5 next at 19%, while trap 2 has yet to win a single race at the grade and trip and traps 3 and 6 barely trouble the scorer. The sample is thin, so call it a strong lean rather than gospel. This Moorstown Kennels Stakes Final is dominated by one kennel: Patrick Guilfoyle, whose runners win at an extraordinary 46% clip, sends out both Magical Faye and Magical Marty, and between them they've won five of their six starts over this course and distance. Faye — unbeaten here in three, never rated below 91 in this stake, drawn in the best box — is the one they all have to beat. Saleen Jak Jak, a 90-rated semi winner himself, is the strongest outside challenge to the kennel one-two.
Unbeaten in three starts over this course and distance and never rated below 91 in any of them — 91, 93, 91, culminating in last week's semi-final win clocked at 27.11, the fastest recent time in the field. Her 84 average towers over this field by five clear points and her trainer Patrick Guilfoyle wins at a scarcely believable 46%. Now she draws trap 4, which wins 25% of races at this grade and trip — the best box on the card. Three perfect signals stacked on the best dog in the race: this is as strong as an Irish-card pick gets.
The stablemate, and the second-best profile in the race — two wins from three course and distance starts, back-to-back 91s earlier in the stake, and the same red-hot Guilfoyle kennel behind him. He was collared late last week when second, and trap 5 is the second-best box at this grade and trip. If anything trips up his kennelmate, he's positioned to inherit; a forecast pairing with Faye is the obvious play.
Won his semi-final with a 90-rated run in 27.23 and ran an 89 earlier in the summer, so on his best form he belongs in this final. All form at A3 level, no trials. The trouble is the stuff between the peaks — ratings in the 50s and 60s litter his record — and trap 1 has won just one in ten at this grade and trip. Genuine on his day; the question is whether the day comes twice in a week.
Honest and consistent — his last six runs at A2-A3 level all fall between 58 and 72 — but he's never won in three tries at this course and distance, and his draw is statistically the worst on the card: trap 2 has not produced a single winner in twenty attempts at this grade and trip. Everything about the profile says solid placer, nothing says winner.
Placed in his last two here with a 79 peak two starts back, and six straight A3 runs give his form an honest look — no trials, no grade-hopping. But he's winless from three course and distance starts, his trainer's runners have been out of form, and trap 3 has won just 6.7% at this grade and trip. Hard to see him reversing form with the two semi winners ahead of him.
Ran an 87 two starts back and his 27.61 best time stands up respectably in this field, with one win from three course and distance starts. All form at A2-A3 level. But he found the Guilfoyle pair too strong last week, and trap 6 has won barely one race in twenty at this grade and trip — a wide draw over a distance where the middle boxes hold all the aces. Place claims at best.
Key insight: Trap 4 is the box at this grade and trip, winning 25% (20 runs) with trap 5 next at 19.1%; trap 2 is zero from twenty. Thin sample (116 runs) but a heavy middle-outside lean. Ratings alone convert poorly (13.6%).
