Newbridge's 525m at A4 is where the stopwatch earns its keep — the fastest dog in the field wins nearly 30% of these races (68 runs), double what the ratings leader manages, while trap 3 (25.7%) is the box to be in and the wide pair of traps 5 and 6 win barely one in ten apiece. Tonight the fastest dog and the form dog are the same animal: Swift Hazed won this grade last time with an 83-rated career best, holds the top speed rating in the field, and has been running creditably against A3 company all summer. His draw in trap 2 is the one blemish — it's a below-average box here. Home Darragh is the classic danger profile, a dog sliding down from A1 and A2 company who owns the fastest single time in the race; if the grade drop wakes him up he's a threat from a good middle draw. Ridgemount Wind has been similarly grade-dropping but nine course and distance runs without a win temper enthusiasm. Leinsterfivestar returns from two marathon-trip experiments and is better than his recent figures.
Won this grade last time out with an 83-rated career best — his first win at this course and distance in two starts — and everything underneath the headline is just as strong: the top speed rating in the field, the best average time by four lengths, and a summer of solid thirds against A3 company a grade above tonight. At a track and grade where the fastest dog wins nearly three in ten, being clearly the fastest and in career-best form is the winning profile. The below-par trap 2 draw is the one genuine knock, and the only thing keeping confidence at medium rather than strong.
The class dropper. Two months ago he was racing A1 and A2 company; tonight he meets A4 rivals off the back of an improving third at this grade last time. His 29.07 is the fastest single time in the race and his 88-rated peak dwarfs most of this field — when a dog with that ceiling finds his level, he tends to win quickly. The concerns are real though: one win in his last ten, average times well below his best, and no previous run at this exact course and distance. From a good trap 4 draw he's the biggest threat to the selection if tonight is the night it clicks.
Slid down from A2 company through the spring and ran his best recent race when fourth at this grade last month, so the drop is slowly working. But nine runs at this course and distance without a win — and just one place — is a damning record, and his times are the slowest in the field bar none on the average. The rail draw is only middling at this grade. Honest, exposed, and hard to see winning.
The form is climbing fast — a 76-rated A6 win in mid-June, a creditable fourth on his first try at this grade last time, and places at every level on the way up. He lands the best box at the trip, the trap 3 that wins more than one in four A4 races here. The catch is the clock: his best time is three to four lengths slower than the leading pair, and rising four grades in six weeks usually finds a ceiling. Margaret Bolton's 23% strike rate and the draw make him the each-way alternative.
Ignore the last two lines of form — they came in marathon 730m events that told us nothing except that he doesn't stay. Back at his proper trip tonight, the picture is fairer: he was rated 70 at this grade in April and his 29.24 best puts him within two lengths of the leaders. The problem is the draw — trap 5 wins barely one in ten A4 races here — and one winless previous try at this course and distance. Better than his recent figures, but the box is against him.
Hasn't raced since late April — nearly three months off — and was struggling at A3 before the break, finishing sixth twice. The positives are a sharp 29.23 clocking that ranks third in this field, a drop in grade that should help, and Scott Phelan's respectable 25% strike rate. But a rusty dog from trap 6, the worst box at this grade, needs everything to go right. More likely to need the run.
Key insight: The fastest dog wins 29.4% at A4 here (68 runs) — the strongest single signal at this grade and well clear of the ratings leader's 19.2%. Trap 3 (25.7%) and trap 4 (22.1%) dominate the draw; traps 5 and 6 win barely one in ten.
