The second of tonight's novice events over Newbridge's 525m trip, where the draw is close to even across nearly 2,000 runs — traps 3 and 4 marginally best at around 18%, traps 2 and 5 weakest at 12-13% — and the clock is normally king. Once again the clock is silent: all six are first starters with no published trials, so breeding, age and stable signals have to do the work. Badminton Folly gets the best structural box in trap 3 and her trainer's only recent runner here made the frame, a small but real sign the yard's dogs turn up ready. Kilcooley is the most interesting outsider — a Magical Bale dog who is fully two and a half years old, which usually means a late-schooled type with plenty of gallops behind him, though he has to overcome the worst draw on the card. Mylerstown Daisy has elite breeding by Dorotas Wildcat but is barely seventeen months old. A race to watch more than bet.
A November 2024 bitch by Newinn Taylor out of Distant Emma, and the pick on the thin evidence available for two reasons. First, she has drawn trap 3, the best-performing box over this trip here across nearly 2,000 runs — a genuine structural edge when nothing else separates the field. Second, Donal Murphy's only recent runner at this track made the frame, a small hint that his dogs arrive fit and ready rather than needing the run. None of that tells us whether she can actually gallop, so this is a speculative vote for the best draw and the most encouraging stable signal in a race of complete unknowns.
The most intriguing runner in the race — a son of Magical Bale, one of the most potent sires in the world, and at two and a half years old he is no rushed baby. Dogs that debut at this age have usually had extensive schooling, and connections by Magical Bale tend not to persevere with slow ones. The problem is the draw: trap 5 has been the worst box over this trip here, winning barely one race in eight. If he's good enough, class beats draw — and he's the one with the class to do it.
By Pestana out of Combined Effort and whelped back in November 2023, making him one of the two older debutants in the race at over two and a half. Age at first start cuts both ways — it can mean a well-schooled dog finally ready, or one who has taken a long time to convince anybody. From the rail he'll need to break well or risk being buried at the first bend. Nothing measurable to recommend or condemn him.
The bluest blood in the race — by Dorotas Wildcat, a genuinely elite sire, out of Pats Angela. The catch is that she was whelped in February 2025, making her barely seventeen months old, the sort of age where even well-bred pups can run green. She's also landed in trap 2, one of the two poorest boxes over this trip. The pedigree says she'll win races; the age and the draw say maybe not this one.
A November 2024 bitch by Ballymac Vic out of Pennys Jetstream — a full sister, on paper, to Pennys Ember who runs in the earlier novice event tonight, which tells you a breeder is putting a whole litter through its paces this evening. Trap 4 is joint-best draw territory over this trip, so she has a fair platform if she's forward enough. Another blank page otherwise.
A July 2024 bitch by Here Comes Syd out of Miss Clover, representing the same Eric Thorpe yard as Extra Hour in this race — the trainer's only recent runner here was unplaced. The wide draw is kind to first starters, offering a clear run to the bend, and at a full two years old she should be mature enough to handle the occasion. But with no trials, no times and no stable strike rate to point to, she's simply another name in the hat.
Key insight: Barely any ON2 novice races have been run here, so the draw figures come from nearly 2,000 runs across all 525m grades: traps 3 and 4 are marginally best at 18%, traps 2 and 5 weakest at 12-13%. With a field of unraced dogs, breeding, trainer strike rate and draw are the only handles.
