Yarmouth's 462-metre trip is a very fair one overall - no genuine trap advantage built into the layout and the long home straight catches prominent runners more often than it rewards them, so don't over-value raw early pace here. At this lower A9 grade specifically though, trap six has been the standout box at close to 27%, with traps one and two the weakest at around 11% each. This race is dominated by one factor above all else: Getaway Car steps down from open-race class all the way to A9, a drop of nine grades, on the back of a win at A2 level just eight days ago. Nothing else in this field is remotely near her level on the clock. Two runners, Brownsdon Max and Onthelookout, arrive with no graded racing form at all - only trials - which makes them impossible to assess with any confidence tonight.
Won impressively at A2 level just eight days ago and has been racing regularly in open-race and A2/A3 company all year - a colossal drop in grade to line up here at A9 tonight, nine full levels below her recent form. The clock backs it up emphatically: her recorded times are close to a second faster than anything else in this field, a gap that simply doesn't exist at this level of racing. Her trainer has a strong record in these conditions, albeit from a small sample. The one knock is the draw - trap two has been one of the two weakest boxes at this grade - but the size of the class and speed advantage here makes that a minor concern rather than a real threat to her chance. Everything points to a dog simply too good for this field tonight.
Won at this exact grade and trip three starts back before stepping up and finding the tougher A8 company too sharp, finishing well beaten in her last two starts there. Now returns to A9 where she's already shown she has the measure of this level. The second-fastest recorded time in the field on the clock, and she carries genuine course and distance experience that the selection lacks, having never raced at this grade before. Trap one hasn't been a strong box at this grade either, in the same boat as the selection's draw. The most dangerous runner in the race if the drop in grade for the selection doesn't translate as expected.
No graded racing form at all - every recent outing has been a trial, run alone or against minimal company with no betting market and no pack pressure. Trial performances like these are unreliable as a guide to open racing; dogs who've only trialled often run green in a pack, drifting off a true line when they meet traffic for the first time. There's no way to responsibly assess his winning chance from this data. Impossible to fancy with any conviction until he's shown something in an actual graded race.
Been battling at the tougher A8 grade recently without much luck, finishing no better than fourth in her last three starts there, so the drop back to A9 is a sensible move on paper. The recorded times are the slowest of the graded runners in this field though, and the suitability figures are weak across the board - track, distance and trap all rate poorly for her. Her trainer hasn't had a runner through these exact conditions recently. Others have stronger claims tonight even accounting for the easier grade.
Like Brownsdon Max, this one has no graded racing form logged - only trials, and recent ones at that, all against minimal company. There's no recorded time to compare against the rest of this field and no suitability data to lean on either. Trial form doesn't translate reliably to open racing, where traffic and tactical pressure change everything. His trainer has a fair overall record but that alone isn't enough to build a case on completely unproven form.
Placed in two of his last three starts at this level, including third last time out, and shows sharp early pace that tends to fade in the closing stages - a runner who sets things up rather than finishes them off. Drawn in the best-performing box at this grade, which has produced over a quarter of recent winners, a definite point in his favour. His trainer's record in these conditions is respectable. The pace and draw are working for him, but the two above him on the numbers look a cut above what he's shown recently.
Key insight: The fastest dog in the field wins nearly 34% of races at this grade - speed matters more than the composite here - and Getaway Car is faster than anything else in this race by an enormous margin.
