Towcester's 500m trip is often billed as a galloping test, but in this A5 grade the opening bend still does plenty of sorting - trap 1 has won 27% of races here from 260 runs, nearly double the rate produced by the wide boxes 5 and 6. Salacres Frankie gets the plum draw and has been racing consistently well at exactly this course and distance. Bambis Daisy and Harlequin Toast will both look to use their sharp pace early, but both tend to weaken once the pack catches up, which should suit the two proven closers in the field, Giant Killer and Fifis Lad, if the pace up front gets messy. Knockard Joe arrives full of running after an eye-catching win last time out and can't be ignored from trap 6 despite the tricky draw.
Drawn in trap 1, comfortably the best box in this grade at Towcester - it has produced 27% of winners from 260 runs, nearly double the rate from the wide traps. Has run at this exact course and distance in each of his last six starts, placing in four of them, and his form has been admirably consistent: 59, 58, 52, 68, 56 and 46 shows he rarely runs a bad race. Quick enough away and handles the first bend well, though he does tend to fade in the closing stages once the pace goes on. Trainer P H Harnden's overall strike rate is modest, but this looks the ideal opportunity for a dog who keeps knocking on the door in exactly the right box.
Carries the best average performance figure in the race and has hit a rating of 71 twice in his last six starts, showing he has more up his sleeve than a run-of-the-mill A5 performer. A confirmed closer who does his best work from off the pace, which could suit nicely if the fast starters up front burn each other out early. Trap 4 is a fair rather than favoured box in this grade, and his course suitability figures are modest, but on raw ability he's the biggest threat to the selection.
Been stepping up through the grades recently, coming from A8 company over 462 metres through A6 and now into this tougher A5 assignment at 500 metres, so his mixed formline is not as strong as the raw numbers suggest. A confirmed closer who finishes off races strongly but is the slowest in the field on the clock. Drawn in trap 2, which sits in the upper-middle for bias in this grade, but he needs a strongly run race in front of him to have any real chance of featuring.
Faded out of things last time when only sixth, but the form before that reads much better - a peak of 62 with several minor places at this same course and distance. Shows fast early pace and the best first-bend rating in this field, but like several in this race she tends to lose her placing once the closers get going late on. Drawn in trap 3, which sits around mid-table for bias in this grade, so she is more of an each-way watch than a banker.
The fastest dog in the race on the clock and quickest into her stride from the traps, but trap 5 has been comfortably the worst box in this A5 grade at Towcester, producing barely half the winners of trap 1. Her figures have also been modest of late, with three of her last five runs rated below 50, and her own suitability figures for this exact trap are poor. The speed alone may not be enough to overcome the draw.
Improved with a smart win last time out at exactly this course, distance and grade, bettering his previous efforts by some way with a rating of 70 - the best figure anyone in this field has produced recently. Trainer P B Philpott has the best strike rate of any handler represented today at 26%, and the booking looks a deliberate one. Trap 6 has been the weaker of the wide boxes in this grade, which is the only knock, but on figures and market intent alone he's right in this.
Key insight: Trap 1 has been the standout box in this grade at Towcester, winning 27% from 260 runs - nearly double trap 5's rate of 13.5%. The top-rated dog on the day wins just under a quarter of the time here, a modest but real edge.
