Newcastle's 480m trip is a fair test with a long home straight, but the numbers say it isn't quite as even as its reputation suggests — trap 5 has actually been the best box here at close to 20%, and trap 6 the weakest, so the wide draw carries a small edge tonight even before a dog runs a yard. Five Alley Macy gets that favourable draw and goes fast enough early to be involved from the first bend, but she fades hard once the closers get organised, so she'll need the front to be generous. Malt Sally, drawn on the rails, has already won twice from six goes at this track and trip and should be handy throughout without needing the gaps to open. Alnwick News is the fastest of the lot on the clock and improving with every run — she looks the one best placed to be finishing over the top of them if it's an even pace race.
The fastest dog in the race on the clock and clearly working her way into form — a recent peak of 65 followed a string of races in the 40s, so she's trending the right way. Her trainer has a decent overall strike rate across a big sample of runners, which adds a little confidence. Nothing else in the field matches her for pace on recent times, and she looks the type to be arriving late if the leaders go too hard early.
Won two of her last six starts over this course and distance, and both wins came from this very trap — she knows exactly what's required here. Form of 44, 68, 54, 41, 61, 67 (most recent first) is up and down but the peaks are recent, not ancient history, and she's a genuine finisher who keeps coming back for more. The main danger to the selection if the pace sets up for a strong closer.
Only one run into her book so far, a clear second at this grade last time, so there isn't much of a track record to lean on yet. The clock says she's sharp enough to be competitive, but with a single outing behind her it's a guess rather than a certainty how she copes with a stiffer test. Watch the market for a steer on how she's rated in the yard.
A first-time runner with no form to assess whatsoever — there's simply nothing on the book to judge her by. Debutants can go either way at this level and this one is a total unknown until she's had a run under her.
Won last time out at an easier grade and steps up in class today, so there's a question over whether that form translates. She's sharp away from the traps but has a poor record of holding her position late, and drops away once the pace picks up in behind her — the sort of profile that can look good for two bends and then get swallowed up. The favourable draw in trap 5 is the main thing going for her.
Key insight: Trap 5 edges it as the best box at this grade and trip (19.5% from 354 runs) while trap 6 lags clearly behind (14.8% from 311 runs) — a real if modest bias worth respecting.
