Sunderland's 450 metres features a long run to a first bend that is notoriously difficult to manoeuvre, and at A5 grade trap 2 has been the best box, winning 20.6% from 325 runs, with trap 4 the weakest at 16.4%. Mid-grade racing here is genuinely hard to call — no single measure separates winners reliably, so treat every angle as a lean rather than gospel. The early pace lies with Freeway Sultan in trap 5, comfortably the sharpest away and the best first-bend performer, and he should lead them into the turn. Bawn Dawn and Roaming Ariana are versatile sorts who will race prominently, while Kilbannon Oisin and Gripwell Cammy are slow starters relying on late runs. If Freeway Sultan's habitual late weakening kicks in, Bawn Dawn — the quickest in the field on the clock — is best placed to pounce.
The fastest dog in the field on the clock and she arrives on the back of a win — she took an A6 event here on 12 July with a rated-71 effort, comfortably her best recent run. Versatile enough to sit handy behind the early leader, and her last run over this course and distance clocked 27.77, the quickest recent time in this race. Ten course and distance runs, with a win and six placings, mean she knows every inch of the track. The step back up to A5 grade is the question, but on speed she sets the standard.
Comfortably the sharpest away and the best first-bend performer in the race — he will lead them into the turn. Two wins from ten attempts at this course and distance, and trainer P Miller operates at a strong 34% strike rate, the best on the card. The worry is well documented: he shows blistering early pace but tends to weaken in the closing stages, so he needs to steal enough of a lead early to hang on late. He did exactly that twice here before.
The most consistent performer in the race on overall ratings and drawn in trap 2, the best box at this grade and trip, winning just over one in five. The catch is the punchline: nine course and distance runs without a win, six of them placings. He is outpaced early, relies on a strong late run on a track that does late runners few favours, and keeps finding one too good. Place claims are solid; winning claims less so.
Second here last week and hit a rated-72 peak four runs back, so the ability is genuine. Second-quickest in the field on the clock and races prominently, though her record at the track is modest — one win from ten course and distance starts. Another bold showing would not surprise, but she needs to break the habit of finding one or two too quick at the business end.
Struggling for form since dropping from A4 grade and yet to trouble the judge in five runs at this course and distance. She is slow into stride, relies on a late run, and is drawn in trap 4 — the weakest box at this grade, winning barely one in six. Hit a rated-62 effort four runs back so she is not hopeless, but everything about this set-up is against her.
Owns the fastest career best time in this field at 27.68, but that was a while ago — her form since dropping from A4 grade reads poorly and she was well beaten here last week. The wide draw is respectable at this trip and she has won over course and distance before, yet she needs to recapture something she has not shown for several weeks. Watch for market support before trusting.
Key insight: 1,826 runs at A5 over 450m. Trap 2 is the best box at 20.6%, trap 4 the worst at 16.4%. The fastest dog in the field wins 23% of these — raw speed is the most reliable single guide at this grade.
