Sunderland's 450 metres — a long charge to a first bend that catches plenty out — wraps up the card, and at A4 grade trap 2 is the best box, winning 21.1% from 380 runs, with trap 3 the weakest at 15.6%. Raw speed is the best guide at this grade here, well ahead of any ratings measure. The early war is the story of the race: Hollyhill Beauty is the sharpest away with the best first-bend figure, but Bashful Pebbles is the only out-and-out front runner in the field and has been making all to win three on the bounce. If Pebbles outbreaks Beauty from the rail, she could be gone; if Beauty leads, her habit of weakening late hands the closers Marinas Monza and Ozz Got It something to aim at up the straight.
Three runs over this course and distance, three wins — she has swept up from A7 through A6 to A5, making virtually all the running each time, and her rating has climbed with every start, peaking at 75 when winning again on 8 July. She jumps, leads and keeps galloping, with the most consistent pace figures in the race, and she is the only genuine front runner in the field. Second-fastest on the clock by the barest of margins and the best of these on overall ratings. A4 is another step up and Hollyhill Beauty will contest the early lead, but a dog winning three straight with this profile is the one they all have to beat.
The fastest in the field on the clock and the best first-bend performer — she will be right there from the boxes and hit a rated-80 peak three runs back when winning at this level. One win from three starts at this course and distance. The flaw is stamina: she shows blistering early pace but weakens in the closing stages, and if Bashful Pebbles matches her early she risks getting run out of it twice — once by the rail dog, once by the closers. Third here last week reads well enough.
Drawn in trap 2, statistically the best box at this grade, and drops back from A3 company where he hit a rated-79 effort two runs back. He is outpaced early and stays on late — a profile that needs the two speedballs up front to cut each other's throats, which is far from impossible here. One win from ten course and distance starts keeps expectations honest, but the draw and the class drop earn respect.
Trainer P Miller's 34% strike rate is the main attraction, and two wins from seven course and distance starts show he handles the venue. But he was well beaten in this grade a fortnight ago, he is the slowest of these on the clock, and trap 3 is the worst box at this grade winning under one in six. A strong finisher who needs a messy race in front of him — possible given the pace duel brewing, but a lot has to go right.
A 30% career win rate and two wins from eight course and distance starts mark him as dependable, and he is versatile enough to take up a handy position from the boxes. His ratings have tailed off a touch lately — a rated-74 peak four runs back has given way to mid-50s efforts — and he looks a cut below the front two on raw speed. Solid each-way sort who rarely runs a shocker.
Second here last week and rated 83 at his recent peak, dropping back from open-class company — the class credentials are real and he is third-fastest in the field on the clock. But he is without a win in eight course and distance starts, and the wide draw is one of the weaker boxes at this grade. He keeps hitting the frame without getting his head in front; another placing looks the likeliest outcome.
Key insight: 2,151 runs at A4 over 450m. Trap 2 best at 21.1%, trap 3 worst at 15.6%. The fastest dog in the field wins 24.9% at this grade — clearly the strongest single signal, and well ahead of any ratings-based measure at 20.2%.
