Top-grade racing, and a warning before a bet is struck: A0 over 525 metres at Shelbourne is the most unpredictable pot on the card. The draw statistics are almost flat — traps 1, 2 and 4 all hover around 19% with nothing dominant — and neither the ratings' top pick (about 17%) nor the fastest dog on paper (below 15%) wins often enough at this level to lean on. Class dogs beat each other. Within that fog, Daring Diamond brings the best sustained form, rating a peak 95 against A1 and A2 company, and draws well in trap 2. Your The King has the fastest clock and the red-hot Declan McDonagh kennel behind him, but just three career runs. Expect a fierce first bend among evenly-matched dogs — and treat any confident opinion about this race, including this one, with suspicion.
The most substantial body of top-level form in the race — he has been rating in the 70s, 80s and a peak 95 against A1 and A2 opposition, comfortably the strongest recent figures in this field, and his 28.92 best time sits within a few spots of the fastest. Trap 2 is among the better boxes at a grade where no draw dominates. This is the most unpredictable grade on the card and he is yet to win in three tries at the course and distance, so conviction is capped — but on proven class against this calibre of opposition, he sets the standard they all have to reach.
The sharpest speed figures in the field and a 28.88 best that no rival can better, backed by Declan McDonagh's kennel operating at a 33% strike rate. But he has had just three career races, finished sixth in a top-class event last time, and one modest run at this course and distance is thin grounding for the highest grade. Huge upside, equally huge question marks.
Ran a career-best 69 when second at this grade last week, and Michael Taggart's kennel wins at a 34% clip — a serious operation. But his times are the slowest of the main players and trap 3 is statistically among the weaker boxes at this level. The improving type who is clearly thriving; he just needs to find another gear on the clock to trouble the principals.
An interesting one — he was rating in the high 80s at A4 grade before stepping up, and two runs into life at A0 he has been competitive without threatening. The clock is the concern: his best time is nearly half a second off the leaders, and at this level that is a chasm. Trap 4 is actually a fair box here. Place claims if the leaders take lumps out of each other.
The most course experience in the field — eight runs at the trip — but no wins to show for it, and trap 5 is the worst box at this grade. He ran well enough in third last week and his mid-pack times keep him honest, but the profile is a dog who makes up the frame in top company rather than wins it. Others carry more upside.
Matches the fastest best time in the race at 28.88 and Pat Buckley does not keep slow dogs in top company, but he has been well beaten in his last two starts and his recent ratings trail the field. The ability shown on the clock has not translated into results lately. Needs a career-best night to figure at this level.
Key insight: A0 here is genuinely open: no trap exceeds 19.1%, the top-rated dog wins just 17.3% and the fastest dog only 14.6% — the second-rated runner actually outperforms both. Class dogs beat each other at this level.
