The best race on the card and a genuine two-horse war. At A1 grade over Shelbourne's 525 metres, trap 1 is the best box (23.4% from 137 runs) and trap 4 among the worst at 11% — and that draw split could decide a brilliant contest. Amidus Hulk has been untouchable lately, winning his last two with ratings of 98 and a perfect 100, and he gets the prized inside box. Maireads Susie has been every bit as good — back-to-back 99s, both winning efforts, and the fastest average times in the field — but she is stuck in the graveyard box. Both have won three times at the course and distance. The rest are solid A1 performers racing for third on recent evidence. If Susie breaks smartly enough to cross to the rail early she can make a fight of it; if the Hulk gets first run from the inside, the numbers say he is gone.
Two wins on the bounce with ratings of 98 and a perfect 100 — form that simply towers over most A1 company — and now he draws trap 1, the best box at this grade, winning nearly one in four. Three wins and four placings from five course-and-distance starts make him practically a track specialist, and Karol Ramsbottom's kennel is ticking along at a healthy 25% strike rate. The one caveat is that Maireads Susie has matched him stride for stride on recent form, but she is drawn where races are lost here and he is drawn where they are won. Everything stacks his way.
Impossible to dismiss — back-to-back 99-rated wins, the fastest best time and quickest average in the field, and three wins from six course-and-distance starts. On pure form she is the equal of the selection and on the clock she is arguably ahead. The problem is trap 4, which wins barely one in nine at this grade — a genuine structural handicap in a race this tight. If she pings the lids she wins; the draw is the only reason she is not the pick.
Ran a 97 two starts back and comes from Deirdre Barry's kennel, which is striking at 33% — the best trainer number in the race. Trap 2 is a strong box here too, winning better than one in five. He needs the big two to give him an inch, but of the supporting cast he has the most going for him: draw, kennel form and a recent performance that would win plenty of ordinary A1s.
Solid and consistent — never out of the first three in his last five starts and he ran an 83 three runs back — but he has no wins from seven attempts at the course and distance, and the two market leaders have been operating on an entirely different level. His steady late running needs a proper collapse in front to lift him beyond third place.
Matched the fastest time in the field with his 28.92 last time when second, and he is another from the in-form Ramsbottom kennel. He keeps knocking on the door without winning here — no wins from five course-and-distance runs — and on ratings he needs the top two to underperform. A solid each-way profile in an ordinary A1; this is not one.
Runner-up in two straight and rated 89 two back, so he arrives in decent heart, but trap 6 is the worst box at this grade, winning barely one in ten, and his times trail the principals. He has placed in three of seven course-and-distance starts, which sums him up: thereabouts often, first past the post rarely. The draw only hardens that read.
Key insight: Trap 1 wins 23.4% at A1 (137 runs) while traps 4 and 6 win barely one in ten — a decisive draw split when the two best dogs in the race are drawn 1 and 4.
