| 6 | Acomb Olga | No 280m form — all recent runs over 450m. Times not comparable. | — | First sprint try | ||||
Sheffield's 280-metre sprint is a short dash to the first bend where early pace settles most arguments — there is no time for anyone slow away to recover. At this grade trap 4 has been the pick of the boxes, winning nearly 23% from 179 runs, with trap 2 close behind at 22%, while trap 3 (16.7%) and trap 6 (16.1%) are the weakest draws. There's no trap 4 runner tonight, which shuffles the deck. The likely script: Acomb Olga has far and away the sharpest early pace in this field and should burn out of trap 6 despite that box's poor record, with Newinn Polly breaking well from the rail. Savana Etna is the quickest here on her best clock but she's slow into stride and has to weave through from off the pace — a tall order over 280 metres.
A different class to this field on recent form — she has been running to ratings of 77, 89 and 79 in open-class company over 450 metres, winning twice in her last three starts, while nothing else here has topped the mid-40s lately. All of that form is from proper graded and open racing, no trials involved. Tonight is her first ever try at the 280-metre sprint, which is the obvious risk, but her running style travels: she is a blistering starter who does her best work early — exactly the profile that holds up over a trip this short, where any late fade never gets time to matter. Trainer K J Ferguson wins at a 34% clip, the strongest kennel in the race.
Won her last two on the bounce at D3 grade and has gone unbeaten into the first two places in all three of her course-and-distance runs, two of them wins. She is the best proven sprinter in the field on ratings, holds the best average time here, and is drawn on the rail where she can break clean. Earlier this year she was running to the 60s and 70s in A3 company, so this level is comfortably within reach. If the newcomer fluffs the trip, she is the one who profits.
The fastest best time in the race at 16.26, and her recent form in better company reads well — second in an invitation race last time and a 78-rated effort in open class before that. The problem is her record here: no wins in nine course-and-distance attempts, and she is slow into stride, relying on a late rattle over a trip that rarely allows one. Drawn in trap 2, one of the better boxes, which helps, but another minor placing looks her most likely outcome.
Well beaten in her last two at this grade, finishing fifth and sixth, and recent ratings in the high 20s put her at the bottom end of this field. One win from ten course-and-distance runs and all her recent racing has been at this level, so the form is honest — just not good enough at present. Drawn in trap 3, statistically the worst inside box at this grade. Hard to make a winning case.
Won at D3 two runs back and has placed in four of ten course-and-distance starts, so she is capable of running into the frame at this level. Her form is all from graded racing at these lower sprint grades, which makes her a known quantity. Times have been modest lately though — her last run was over two lengths shy of her best — and she needs a step forward to trouble the principals from a middle-wide draw.
Key insight: Top-rated dog wins 23.2% from 444 runs, the fastest wins 22.9% — both real edges. Trap 4 (22.9%) and trap 2 (22.0%) are the productive boxes; trap 3 and trap 6 are the ones to avoid.
