The selection, though this is a genuinely difficult race to call. Won at A6 grade last time out on June 6 with a performance of 58 — the most recent win in the field — and has a peak of 65 from a handicap win in May. A Front Runner who will press early from trap 6, which shows 20% in Newcastle handicap races — a decent draw, materially better than the 11.2% facing Medusa and the 12.3% facing Dower Skippy. Speed rank 2 in the field (73) behind Medusa. The key advantage over Medusa is the trap: Anglesey Flight from 20% versus Medusa from 11.2% at a galloping track where the draw still matters. Front Runners at Newcastle 480m with the home straight available have the ability to get to the front and make the others chase. Recent form is inconsistent — a 23 at sprint grade in late May was poor — but the A6 win last time and the HP win in May show the ability is there. Tentative because the field is competitive and Dower Skippy's recent HP form is arguably better.
Danger: best recent form in the field including a 68-rated HP run, but the second-worst handicap draw is a significant obstacle. The form is the pick's biggest threat.
Best draw in the race but the ability level is too limited. The trap helps but the dog needs to be competitive to use it.
Decent draw advantage but form is too modest to make a case as the outright selection. Place candidate.
Consistent but limited — reliable placer at A9 but unlikely to win from a below-average draw in this company.
Speed leader but worst trap draw in the race. Speed R1 from worst trap at Newcastle HP is a structural mismatch that is hard to overcome.
HP trap bias strongly favours T1/T2 and penalises T4/T5. Composite R1 at 18.8% is weak — draw and current form are the primary factors. Anglesey Flight (T6, 20%) won at A6 last time; Medusa (T5, 11.2%) is speed leader but in worst draw.
