A tricky top-end sprint where the clock tells two different stories — and with no historical Dundalk trap data, no draw statistics to referee between them. Three of these — Darbys Zoe, Panda Power and Dapper Dora — have posted last-time figures around 21.7 seconds, three or four lengths quicker than anything the rest have recorded, but none of the trio has enough racing behind them to earn a full speed rating and all three are stepping into deeper waters tonight. Donishall Woods in trap 4 is the most exposed at this level and owns the best rated times in the race, with barely a tenth between his best, average and latest clockings. Panda Power is two-from-two over Dundalk's 400 metres, albeit at far humbler grades, with the strongest stable in the race behind him. The break decides it: if the lightly raced speedballs transfer their times to this grade the form book goes out the window, but proven, repeatable pace at the level is the percentage side of the argument.
The steadiest, most proven profile in a race full of question marks — his best, average and latest rated times all sit within a tenth of a second of each other, the top figures among the rated runners, and he has been running honestly at this grade and the one below all summer, including over the longer trip. Nothing flashy, but while three rivals bring quicker one-off clockings from lower grades or single starts, he is the only dog here who has repeatedly produced near-identical fast times against this calibre of opposition. In a sprint where the flashy times all come with asterisks, repeatable pace at the level is the percentage call.
Unbeaten in two starts over Dundalk's 400 metres, winning a novice event in May and then bolting up at one of the track's lowest grades in June in 21.73 — a time only one dog in this field has bettered. His trainer wins with nearly a quarter of his runners, comfortably the strongest stable form in the race. The catch is the size of tonight's class jump: from the bottom sprint grade straight to near the top is an enormous ask, and his rating history gives no rated speed figure to lean on. If the times are real, he is the winner; that is a genuine if.
Took on stronger S2 sprint company than this last time and clocked 21.73 in defeat — on raw times arguably the best single piece of form in the race, and she is a 525-metre winner too, so a strongly run 400 holds no stamina fears. But that is her only start over this course and distance, she carries no rated speed figure yet, and her form figures swing from brilliant to blank. The top-rated performer here on average form; the evidence is just thinner than the selection's.
A course and distance winner at a lower grade in May, but he has found this level too hot in two tries since — sixth both times, and his recorded times sit fully three lengths shy of what the fastest here have been posting. Seven course and distance runs give him plenty of track knowledge, yet on the evidence of his two runs at this grade he needs several of these to underperform badly.
His best work has come over 525 metres and the shorter 335-metre dash — he has never raced over Dundalk's 400 — and he has not been seen since late May. A strong showing against good company at that shorter sprint trip in May shows the engine is real, but the seven-week layoff, the unfamiliar trip and a fading set of recent figures make him very hard to trust tonight.
One career start, a second in a novice event over this course and distance — and the fastest last-time figure in the entire race at 21.71. That is an eye-catching debut, but a single novice run is the thinnest possible evidence for a leap straight to one of the track's top sprint grades, and she may run green in a competitive pack. Enormous upside, no proof. Dangerous if she breaks well; unbackable on one line of form.
Key insight: Sample is the field's own combined course-and-distance runs (13) — no track-level historical database exists for Dundalk yet. Three lightly raced runners hold flashy unrated clockings, but the pick is the only dog combining rated field-best times with repeated exposure at this grade.
