On paper the most one-sided race on the card, run over Dundalk's three-bend 525-metre trip where sustained pace counts for more than a flying break — though with no historical trap data at this track the draw is read from form alone. Woodcliff Pear drops into this grade from weeks of A2 and A3 company where she was winning and placing, and she owns the fastest best time in the field by a fifth of a second plus the top speed figure. The only cloud is drawn right beside her: Pharis Peak is another class-dropper who produced the two biggest single performances in this field earlier in the summer. Those two are lengths clear of the rest on everything measurable — Geezer Mccool and Swift Zachery are next best and both arrive in form, but both need career bests. Expect the two wide runners to dominate from the second bend onwards.
Everything points one way. She has spent the summer racing much stronger A2 and A3 company — winning in mid-June and hitting a monster figure the week after — and now drops to a grade where her numbers tower over the field. Fastest best time by a fifth of a second, quickest average and latest times, the top speed rating, and three course and distance wins from ten starts with four frame finishes. Class-droppers with proven pace at the track are the most reliable profile in racing, and she is emphatically that. The one they all have to beat, and on the evidence, most of them cannot.
The other class-dropper, and on peak form the biggest engine in the race — his second against strong A2 company in mid-June was the single best performance figure in this field, and he won at a similar level in late May. He has drifted since, finishing midfield in his last two, and he has only raced over this course and distance once. If the June version turns up the two wide runners fight this out between them; the selection's consistency gets the vote.
Second at this grade a fortnight ago and ran a huge race against A3 company in June, so he is in form and the level is right. But five course and distance runs without a win, and a best time a quarter of a second shy of the selection's, leave him fighting for the minor money unless the big two misfire. A solid each-way profile from the inside draw.
Second at this grade in June and rarely runs a bad race — her latest run matched her career-best time, which shows she is in good heart right now. The trouble is the ceiling: nothing she has ever done on the clock gets near what the two class-droppers produce routinely. Consistent, thereabouts, and most likely running on for third.
A big third at this grade two weeks ago and a bold showing against strong sprint company in June read well, but seven course and distance runs without ever making the first two frame the task honestly. The slowest best time in the field means he needs trouble in front to get involved. Others make far more appeal.
Runner-up at this grade in late June and holds his own against A3 company regularly — the form is genuine and his best time is third-quickest here. Only two runs over this course and distance though, and he has not won anywhere in his last ten starts. The frame claims are real; getting past the two wide class-droppers is the problem.
Key insight: Sample is the field's own combined course-and-distance runs (32) — no track-level historical database exists for Dundalk yet. Class-dropper with the fastest time, top speed figure and three course and distance wins takes on a field she towers over on the clock.
