This is Open Race grade at Star Pelaw over 435m, a track with the highest rate of all-the-way winners in the country thanks to a tight opening bend that heavily rewards inside runners. Trap 1 is the standout box at this level, winning over a quarter of Open races here, with trap 6 the surprise second-best performer despite being drawn widest. Tromora Meg gets the plum trap 1 draw and comes into this on the back of a recent win, while Tromora Grace - clearly the most consistent dog on paper - is drawn in the weaker trap 4. Expect Meg to use the rail to get across early, with Grace needing to work from further out to get involved.
Drawn in trap 1, comfortably the best box in Open company here, winning over a quarter of races from this draw. The form has been building nicely - won two back with a career-best performance and was runner-up last time out. Nine course and distance runs at this exact track and trip have produced two wins and five places overall, a solid record. With the rail draw to go with an improving profile, she gets the vote as the most rounded package in the field tonight.
The fastest and most consistent dog in the race on the raw figures - form of 80, 84, 75 across her last three starts and the best recorded times of anyone here. Her course and distance record is outstanding: two wins and five places from eight runs at this exact combination, comfortably the strongest in the field. The one thing working against her is the draw - trap 4 has been a below-average box in Open company at Star Pelaw, well behind trap 1. On pure ability she is arguably the best dog in the race.
Stepped up and won impressively at the tougher A1 grade two runs back, which shows real ability, but tonight's assignment is a step into Open company and trap 2 has been one of the weaker draws at this level. Trainer Watson has a strong overall win rate, which is worth noting, but the pace figures here are inconsistent and the slowest recorded time in the field doesn't help her cause.
Consistent without being spectacular, with form in the high 60s to low 80s across the last six starts, mostly gained in stronger grades. Five runs at this course and distance have yielded three places but no win, and trap 3 offers only a modest 18.5% strike rate in Open company. A each-way type rather than a genuine threat to the front two.
Steps up sharply in grade tonight after a run of form at the much lower B-grade level, where her figures have sat in the high 30s to low 50s. That form simply doesn't stack up against dogs racing regularly in Open company. Trap 5 is also the weakest draw in the field at this level. Only one previous run at this course and distance, a place. A big step into the unknown.
Drawn in trap 6, which has been a strong second-best box in Open company here despite being the widest draw. Won impressively three runs back, but most of his recent starts have actually come over the longer 590m trip rather than tonight's 435m, so the fitness for this shorter trip is a slight unknown. Course and distance record at 435m is decent - two wins and three places from six runs.
Key insight: Trap 1 is the strongest box in Open company at Star Pelaw over 435m, winning 25.5% from 165 runs, with trap 6 a strong second at 22.7% despite being the widest draw. The top-rated dog wins nearly 31% of the time at this level - one of the most reliable readings on the whole card.
