This is the Stayers Cup Final, and like the puppy final earlier on the card, all six runners come out of the exact same heat round on the 4th of July, so form comparisons are unusually clean. Dunstall's 660-metre trap data is still a tiny sample (29 runs) but trap four has been the strongest box so far at 50%, while traps two and six haven't produced a winner between them. Two of these six actually won their heats — Bluejig Outlaw and Malcolm Bosh — but Bluejig Outlaw did it with by far the faster clock time and drops back in from the favoured trap four box. Bandit Paddy, runner-up in the heat, looks the biggest threat if he can match the pace of the leaders over the closing stages of this genuine staying test.
Won his heat with a flawless performance rating and has been in scintillating recent form, with two perfect figures in his last two starts. He's comfortably the fastest dog in this field on the clock, more than twenty points clear of the next best on speed rating, and he's drawn in trap four, which has been the strongest box in Dunstall's early 660-metre sample at 50% from four runners. His trainer M L Locke wins better than one in four overall. Every factor stacks in his favour here — the best trap, by far the fastest clock time, and the standout recent form of the six heat qualifiers.
Finished a close second in the heat with an excellent figure of 99, and the model's own probability calculation actually rates him the most likely winner of this whole field. He carries the second-highest average performance rating and is tied for the second-fastest on the clock. Trap three has a fair record in this small sample at 20%. His trainer wins one in five overall. If the pace map falls his way over this longer trip, he has every right to reverse the heat form with the selection.
Also finished second in his heat, with figures that have been consistently strong all season — 92 and 94 feature among his recent runs alongside tonight's qualifying effort. He shows a notably strong fit for this specific class of race in the suitability data. Trap five has managed no winners yet in this small sample, which is a concern for a fancied runner. Tied for the second-quickest on the clock. A each-way threat if the draw doesn't count against him too heavily.
The other heat winner in this final, recording a perfect performance figure last time out, and he carries a solid overall average too. The problem is trap six, which is yet to produce a single winner in the early Dunstall sample at this trip, and he's also the slowest of the six on the sectional clock. Winning a heat is no small thing, but the draw and the pace figures both work against him reproducing that form tonight.
Finished third in the heat with a strong figure of 90, and has been a fairly consistent performer through his recent starts without ever quite hitting the same heights again. Trap two is yet to produce a winner in the early 660-metre sample here. Respected on his heat run but up against a tougher task from the draw tonight.
Finished third in the heat, well held on that occasion, and his figures have been the most volatile of this six — a big 100 sits alongside several much more modest runs. Trap one has actually been a strong draw in the small early sample at 40%, but he's the slowest dog in this field on the clock, which is hard to overcome even from a good box. The weakest of the six on the pace figures.
Key insight: Bluejig Outlaw stacks every factor that matters in this small sample — he's drawn in the best-performing trap (50%), carries the fastest speed rating by more than 20 points over the rest of the field, and won his heat with a perfect performance figure.
Trap 4 strongest at 50% (4 runs), traps 2 and 6 both dead at 0% (5 runs each), trap 1 strong at 40%, trap 3 fair at 20%
