Teddys Lass and Romeo Mig both have a habit of racing wide, and from boxes four and six they'll likely end up out in the wider lanes again, which leaves the rail and the middle of the track for the others to fight over. Zenith Efendi has stuck to the inside in almost every run recently and, drawn in the red jacket, should get first run at the rail if he breaks on terms. Newinn Zulu has shown she can lead if let stride on, having done so from the front two starts back, but she needs a clean break from the orange box to get that chance again — anything less and she'll be swallowed up by the pace of Tetra Cruising and Teddys Lass, both of whom have quicker recent clockings.
Coming off a placed run last time, and the run before that was a front-running win, so there's a recent win in the locker even if the very last start didn't quite match it. One race in the middle of this sequence saw her badly checked and forced to requalify, which makes the overall picture look worse on paper than the ability suggests. The orange jacket has the weakest record of any box in this grade at Newcastle, winning barely one in seven, and she's also the slowest in this field on the clock, both on her best and her most recent time. Her trainer has the best condition record of anyone in this race at close to one in five. Top of the ratings but the data underneath raises real questions — the box and the raw speed both work against her, and this is a case where the model's selection needs the pace to fall apart in front to have a squeak.
Form has been mixed, slowly away last time and only middling the run before after being bumped, but three starts back she led all the way from a wide draw, which shows there's real pace when things go clean. Steps down from A2 company today after finding that level too sharp, which is a positive class move. The black jacket has a solid record in this grade, clearly better than the box carrying today's top pick, and she owns the fastest recorded time and average time of anyone in this field. Her trainer's record in these conditions sits right on the useful mark. The most dangerous runner in this race on the data — faster than the selection, from a better box, and dropping in grade at the same time.
In good form, winning last time out after a sequence of finishes around the middle of the field, and the sectional times show she's been building towards that. The white jacket is the strongest draw in this grade at Newcastle, winning close to a fifth of the time, giving her a genuine structural edge. Matches the pace leaders on the clock, with her recent time as fast as anything else in this race, and she's shown she can post big improvement when everything clicks. Her trainer's record in these conditions is respectable without being outstanding. Could easily reverse the form again from the best box in the race — a leading each-way claim on the balance of the evidence.
Consistent without hitting the front recently, finishing second last time out after a similar effort a couple of starts before that, though there's a fifth in between to explain away. The red jacket carries a solid record in this grade, sitting above the field average, and he's stuck religiously to the inside rail in every one of his recent starts, which should suit again from box one. Not the fastest in this field on the clock but not far off the leading pack either. His trainer's record in these conditions is useful without being exceptional. Respected by the ratings and the inside draw plays to his obvious strength — he'll get every chance to be involved if the pace up front doesn't get away from him.
Form has been steady rather than sharp, with a fourth last time after lacking early pace and being checked, sandwiched between two runs where he was every chance without quite getting there. The blue jacket is the second-weakest box in this grade at Newcastle, a genuine obstacle to overcome. His trainer shares the best condition record on this card at close to one in five, which offers some encouragement. He's shown a fast best time but hasn't reproduced it lately, with his last three sectional times all a shade below his ceiling. Up against it on today's numbers from a below-par box, though the strong trainer record is a mitigating factor worth noting.
Modest recent form, slowly away and racing wide last time to finish down the field, though the run before that saw him lead most of the way from a similarly wide draw before being run down close home. Every one of his last four starts has featured wide running, and from the stripes tonight, box six, he's set to do exactly the same again — a real disadvantage at a track where interference plays a big part in outcomes. The striped jacket has the weakest record of any box in this grade at Newcastle. His trainer's record in these conditions is respectable, but the combination of a poor draw and a genuine tendency to lose ground on the bends leaves him with plenty to find. Up against it on today's numbers from the least productive box in the field.
Key insight: The model's top pick comes from the weakest box in this grade — orange has won barely one in seven races at this level, the softest structural support of any selection so far on the card.
Box three edges it at 21%, orange and stripes weakest around 15%
