It's a reminder that composite ratings capture a dog's underlying ability well but can't always predict a poor jump on the night.
The minor placings tell their own story too. Smooth Sam, sent off the well-backed favourite at odds-on-adjacent 1.80, ran the race the market expected — always up there and challenging on the run-in — but simply couldn't get past a dog that had gone too soon. "A 2nd, ChlRi" is about as honest a losing effort as you'll see; there was no beating the leader from that position. Nushkas Madra, second-best rated in the field beforehand, ran a genuinely clear race but had to settle for fourth, a length or so short of the podium.
The upshot for kennel trackers: Emilias Angel now has a proven quick-away profile at this course and distance and goes straight onto the watch list — that early speed is a repeatable trait, not a one-off. Beat It Slow's underlying form claims are unaffected by this run; a slow break against a fast-breaking field is circumstantial, not a sign the model's rating was wrong, and she's worth persevering with next time she gets a cleaner getaway.
