Here is the class act. Essex Gunner has been competing at open grade and invitational level — he won an invitational 280m in 16.24 seconds, which is not only a career best but the fastest time recorded by any dog in this field by several lengths. He is a Fader with explosive early pace (EP 95), meaning he will burst from the traps and try to put the race to bed immediately over this short sprint trip. At 277m, a Fader can absolutely hold as the closing stages are minimal. The last graded run saw him turn in the traps at OR grade, which is a worry, but his two trials at 277m since then — including a 16.70 second effort — suggest he is back to his best. He has also been placed at invitational grade recently. The only genuine concern is that the M P Brown kennel sends multiple runners tonight and he is not the yard's only representative.
Best genuine D2 C&D form in the field — main danger if pick disappoints.
Trial winner but unproven in graded company — speculative on debut.
Moderate D2 form in a below-average trap — likely to be mid-table.
Best trap draw with decent speed — genuine each-way chance behind the class dog.
Below-field metrics despite a decent draw — hard to see her winning at D2 level.
Composite R1 wins 27.0% from 141 runs at D2 here — strong signal. Bend R1 wins 27.4%. T5/T6 slight edge (22%). Essex Gunner has outstanding times against this field.
