The 15:38 A1 at Hove over 500 metres was supposed to be a straightforward race. Punk Rock Rose, rated top by the model at a composite of 57, shared favouritism with Tea For Me (also 57). Brother Patrick (49) was the third pick. The market had Brother Patrick at 2.10, making him clear favourite in the ring.
What happened was anything but straightforward. The first bend was carnage. Punk Rock Rose, drawn in trap 4, was baulked and fell. That's a DNF for the model's top pick, and there's nothing any prediction system can do about a dog going to the deck at the first turn. Tea For Me, drawn on the rail in trap 1, was crowded at the same bend and lost crucial ground. Dave Allthe Way (trap 2) was badly baulked and finished 8 and a quarter lengths behind.
Through the mess, Cloheena Boyce (trap 3) had broken smartly and led all the way. The run comment says it all: quick away, middle, all led. At 4.33 in the betting, this wasn't a huge outsider, but the model had placed him fourth of five. Sometimes the best form dog is the one who avoids trouble, and from trap 3 Cloheena Boyce did exactly that, clocking 29.83 seconds.
Brother Patrick salvaged second at 29.93 with a clear run wide. Tea For Me was a head further back in third despite the first-bend interference.
The lesson here is one we see repeatedly at Hove A1 level: first-bend crowding is a major factor at this grade and distance. When the best dogs in the field converge at the first turn, the one who gets out clean has an enormous advantage. Cloheena Boyce didn't need to be the best dog in the race. He needed to be the one with the cleanest passage.
Punk Rock Rose is the one to track going forward. A fall tells you nothing about ability, and the pre-race numbers marked this dog as the joint-top rated in an A1 field. When he resurfaces, which will likely be in the same grade at the same venue, he'll be worth a close look assuming a cleaner run.
Brother Patrick confirmed his consistency with a clear-run second. He rarely lets you down when he avoids trouble, and the market has clearly caught on given his short price. Tea For Me's crowding at the first bend was unlucky, and she's another who deserves a line through this performance.
